While societal pressures and norms may give opportunity for individuals to stand out, it has also taken over societies such as Scarsdale High School to a large extent. In Scarsdale, children will feel an aching need to meet the high expectations of their surrounding peers. Many have credited this to an intangible force and need to always impress teachers, peers, and parents as well. Children have admitted to doing extracurriculars and community service solely for the purpose of getting into the best university possible. That may not be an issue, however, in many cases these children are striving to get into colleges they may not even enjoy. In closing, societal pressures and norms may lead individuals to be courageous, however, it can negatively…

When I was 18, my family took a trip to Cancun for Spring Break. I absolutely loved the beaches and palm trees, the white sand, hot sun and blue waves. Ever since then I have had a real passion for tropical islands. My favorite and perhaps the most beautiful Islands I've researched are the Cayman Islands. I've only seen pictures and heard stories but I've already decided that's where I am getting married. I still however, don't know anything about the islands. My love for these islands and my thirst for knowledge on the topic has driven me to do more research and find out the history behind the Cayman Islands. I want to know everything about them, so far the only thing I know is that there are three islands, Grand…

On March 5, 1770 a specific event took place that had impacted many lives. This event is known as the Boston Massacre. The Boston Massacre was considered to be a street fight that took place when a mob started to throw snowballs, stones and sticks at a squad of British soldiers. In the end, five colonists resulted in death. This was caused by the developing tensions in the American colonies that had been growing ever since the Royal troops had first appeared. I believe that the Boston Massacre was an act of self-defense. I say this because, the British soldiers’ lives were under threat and had to use equal force. In addition, a massacre is when many are killed and it consists of an innocent/defenseless side. In the Boston Massacre, both sides were not defenseless. This was not murder either because, this event was not planned or was meant to happen. The British soldiers weren’t intending to kill these colonists. Lastly, manslaughter wouldn’t be reasonable because, the British soldiers killed these colonists in act of defense/protection.…

Last fall our school board decided to make it mandatory for students to attend school year-round. There were many issues to look at before making this decision. I feel that year round school can both benefit and hurt children. There are many issues that people are for and against for year round schooling. What will happen to kids who have summer jobs or even part time jobs? Employers look for kids who are willing to work during the summer months when there are more activities going on in our community. During the school year students can only work part time and during the summer they are able to work more hours. When school is out during the winter months, things are slower, so business is slow. When this happens, it decreases will decrease…

Honors Study Hall is a highly debated topic within Wild Rose High School. People talk about where it should be held, who should be in it, and even if we should have it in the first place. This year our school decided to take honors study hall from the cafeteria and place it in the library. This was a bad idea because instead of changing the location, the subject in which should change is the people who are allowed to be in honors study hall.…

Fear and compassion are two very different feelings that equally drive individuals. Many assume that fear and compassion have absolutely no relationship due to the fact that they are polar opposite emotions that people usually do not associate with each other. Even though they are two very different emotions, fear can be used to express one’s inner compassion. Fear and compassion are two of the most prevalent emotions used in regular human interaction, but unlike compassion, fear is obviously dreaded in society due to the fact that humans in general do like to face and deal with adverse conditions. Leslie Bell, in Hard to Get: Twenty-Something Women and the Paradox of Sexual Freedom, talks about women in early their twenties facing fear about their identities. Robert Thurman’s “Wisdom” speaks about how his experience of becoming a monk taught him to release his inner “self”. And Charles Siebert speaks about the relationship between humans and elephants in the “Elephant Crackup”. Through all of these stories it is clear and apparent that deep and intense fear drives and motivates individuals to become much more compassionate and understanding.…

Some Sumer activities that I like to do or achieve for the school break are having fun with my friends and family and play. On really hot days we go down to the lake and play in the water or go fishing. I also like to play with my dog and go for walks with her if I'm not dragging her all the way there and back. Sometimes I do work with my dad most of the times it involves a lot of elbow grease. I love to do fun activities with my mom that does relate a little work, at the end she gets us a treat. On the days I'm not doing anything I go out with friends or they come to my house, and if I'm good we go to get air, other wise, we just watch movies and relax. On other days when we are in the garden I like to swim, maybe even play with the sprinklers and bother my brothers.…
