While societal pressures and norms may give opportunity for individuals to stand out, it has also taken over societies such as Scarsdale High School to a large extent. In Scarsdale, children will feel an aching need to meet the high expectations of their surrounding peers. Many have credited this to an intangible force and need to always impress teachers, peers, and parents as well. Children have admitted to doing extracurriculars and community service solely for the purpose of getting into the best university possible. That may not be an issue, however, in many cases these children are striving to get into colleges they may not even enjoy.
