Devising a Branding Strategy

A firm’s branding strategy—often called the brand architecture—reflects the number and nature of both common and distinctive brand elements. Deciding how to brand new products is especially critical. A firm has three main choices:

1. It can develop new brand elements for the new product.
2. It can apply some of its existing brand elements.
3. It can use a combination of new and existing brand elements.

When a firm uses an established brand to introduce a new product, the product is called a brand extension. When marketers combine a new brand with an existing brand, the brand extension can also be called a sub-brand, such as Hershey Kisses candy, Adobe Acrobat software, Toyota Camry automobiles, and American Express Blue cards. The existing brand that gives birth to a brand extension or sub-brand is the parent brand. If the parent brand is already associated with multiple products through brand extensions, it can also be called a master brand or family brand. Brand extensions fall into two general categories:63 In a line extension, the parent brand covers a new product within a product category it currently serves, such as with new flavors, forms, colors, ingredients, and package sizes. Dannon has introduced several types of Dannon yogurt line extensions through the years—Fruit on the Bottom, All Natural Flavors, Dan-o-nino, and Fruit Blends. In a category extension, marketers use the parent brand to enter a different product category, such as Swiss Army watches. Honda has used its company name to cover such different products as automobiles, motorcycles, snow blowers, lawn mowers, marine engines, and snowmobiles. This allows the firm to advertise that it can fit “six Hondas in a two-car garage.” A brand line consists of all products—original as well as line and category extensions—sold under a particular brand. A brand mix (or brand assortment) is the set of all brand lines that a particular seller makes. Many companies are

Zhang decides to aim for harder market first because he thinks that after Haier can conquer the developed market, the emerging or developing market should be relatively easy to penetrate. Besides, a lot of other Chinese firms is going towards the emerging markets such as Southeast Asia. Therefore, Haier has a different management in not doing what others do. It is a good thing that Haier distribute niche products and offer many different varieties in different markets with being responsive towards customers need and feedback. In this case, Haier learns in getting to know how the market behaves as well as the competitors around. Unfortunately, there are a few weaknesses in this strategy. First of all, Haier could not be in the scale as the other big competitors therefore Haier will not receive a large market share in developed markets. Plus, Haier in the developed market is very new and unknown by people. In addition, certain foreign markets perceive Chinese products, especially in household appliances and electronic devices, as a relatively poor quality products. Thus brand can be assumed to possess the attributes of creating a product with the hope for achieving satisfying exchange between consumer and supplier. The key is not just the invention but the capability to innovate by bringing the product successfully to the market. An important point to remember is that focus of innovation should be providing new solutions which better meet customer needs. Innovative solutions often do not require major breakthroughs in technology. For example Direct Line became the leader in car insurance by removing the need for brokers through its telemarketing campaigns. Or Dell became the profitable computer company just by becoming the first to market computers directly to its consumers.…

Ans: Brand Extension can be defined as the usage of an established brand name in new product categories. In other words, it is a marketing strategy in which a firm that markets a product with a well-developed image uses the same brand name but for a new product category. This new category to which the brand is extended can be related or unrelated to the existing product categories. Brands use this as a strategy to increase and leverage equity. A renowned/successful brand helps an organization to launch products in new categories more easily. For instance, Nike’s brand core product is shoes. But it is now extended to sunglasses, soccer balls, basketballs, and golf equipments. An existing brand that gives rise to a brand extension is referred to as parent brand. If the customers of the new business have values and aspirations synchronizing/matching those of the core business, and if these values and aspirations are embodied in the brand, it is likely to be accepted by customers in the new business.…
