Part 1a
TOPIC: Early Screening for Breast Cancer
STATE YOUR PURPOSE:
I want to inform more people how important early screening for breast cancer. Early screening can save lives.
INTRODUCTION: Attention-getter: When breast cancer is detected early, the 5-year relative survival rate is 98 percent, but declines to 84 percent for regional disease and 23 percent when cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Audience motivation: Most doctors feel that early detection tests for breast cancer save thousands of lives each year, and that many more lives could be saved if even more women and their health care providers took advantage of these tests. Credibility: I am a big believer that early detection, and early screening saves lives. It saved my aunt. …show more content…
BODY:
I.
Main Point (or claim) #1 Giuliana Ranci- If she hadn’t gone to the doctors to see why she wasn’t getting pregnant ,she might not be here right now.
a. Subpoint or supporting material
a.i. In September 2011, Giuliana was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer. Giuliana was conflicted with what decisions to make. During the month of October Giuliana underwent a surgery called a lumpectomy. A lumpectomy is a procedure that removes the cancer from your breast. Once the surgery was over Giuliana was thrilled she thought the worse was over. Later the results came in and the surgery had not worked. Giuliana was faced with two options to have a mastectomy, a procedure to remove the breasts. Giuliana had the surgery in December of 2011.
a.ii. Supporting because Giuliana was able to detect her cancer early, she had a 98% survival rate at the young age of 36.
b. Subpoint or supporting material
[Transition sentence; This next story is very close to my heart. My Aunt was also diagnosed with early stage breast cancer. II. Main Point (or claim) #2 My Aunt went to the doctors for her regular screening. It was a few weeks later when my family had heard the terrible
news.
a. Subpoint In the early months of 2009 while sitting around having a family dinner my aunt had told us the news. I can remember sitting there in shock and knowing that I had to be positive for my aunt. I knew that if I was strong she would be too. Thankfully my aunt’s cancer looked easy to beat. My aunt went through biopsies and radiation, and she beat her cancer! My aunt was cancer free for four years, and the dreaded phone call happened again.
b. Subpoint This time the cancer came back strong and wanted a fight. My aunt was not giving up. The tricky part was that the previous cancer she had, you couldn’t do the same biopsies and radiation. My aunt had decided to get a double mastectomy in April of 2013.
[Transition] When life gives you many reasons to give up and just quit, you never give up. Giuliana and my aunt both never gave up hope. III. Main Point (or Claim) #3 Fab-U-Wish and bright pink.
a. It is very easy to quit and just give up your fight, but why would you want to give the “C” word that satisfaction? Fab-U-Wish is a similar program to Make A Wish Foundation. Giuliana talked a lot about how easy it would be to her to just give up hope and let cancer win. To build her confidence Giuliana said it was a perk to have people do her hair and make up, and make her feel beautiful for the day. Giuliana thought this would be a great way to help the women feel beautiful again too.
b. After my aunt had her surgery, we didn’t think that she was going to have a positive attitude. Lets face it, when you have a surgery that changes your body for the worst, it’s very easy to see the negative. Not my aunt. My aunt was so gracious that she was given a second chance at life. I have never met a more positive person in my life. If I am having a bad day, I read some of her facebook posts and realize that my problems are miniscule to what she had to go through. My aunt is very open with her story; she wants more people to be educated on early detection, and screening. One of my favorite characteristics about my aunt is that she never once gave up she is a fighter. Her favorite shirt that she wears states “heck yes these are fake, my real ones tried to kill me!!”
CONCLUSION:
The memorable message you want to leave with your audience.
Knowledge is power; the more you know about early screening, and early detection the better your chances.
Summary of main points: How my aunt has made my whole family positive, and have a better outlook on life.
