1. An Art critic offers opinions but can also help us to appreciate aspects of the artwork and other interpretations. What did you learn about Von Guerard’s painting from the critical review by Brian Blanchflower?
From reading the critical review written by Bryon Blanchflower I have learnt a number of different aspects focusing on Von Guerard’s artwork. First glancing at his pieces of art it was noticeably clear that his main style was landscape in fine detailed paints involving an amount of shadows and highlights, space and colour.
Considering Bryon Blanchflower’s analysis, it has given me a different view on the work that was been make by Von Guerard. I have now achieved more of an understanding about his main ideas on that he was trying to achieve and portray in his artwork, Byron wrote about his aspect of shadow and the highlighting going from right to left which is unusual and uncommon for a painting which I didn’t not notice or observe at first glance, and his appreciation for nature and Gods creations. It also became evident the layers he had made in his painting which created a sense of realism and spacing.

Refiring back to the painting by Von Guerard called Mt William it is distinguish obvious that it is an Australian painting truly based on the Australian mountain ‘Mt William’ in Victoria. From the visual of the painting, the colours he has chosen are bland yet very particular, there are a lot of shade of red, browns, dark greens which incorporate an Australian feel to the painting.
