Problem
Many groups have benefited from diversity initiatives, but women have benefited the most out of all the other groups. Even though women still have a long way to go in terms of corporate, economic, and government leadership. Till this day gender is playing a large role in social construction. Some of these issues and factors are within the control of women and some are not we can clearly see this implemented in this case. Briarwood seems to have great opportunities for employees to excel and move up in the organization but it is not apparent that these opportunities are equal for both men and women. Also on an individual basis there is a lot of competition, even though competition is healthy at times, in this case it seems to be more hurtful that it is helpful and caused tension between employees. Also in many organizations the same way there are standards and guidelines that are clearly stated but with this promotion not information was provided to the people that were interested like Diane Williams of what the organization was looking for Diane Williamson felt like she should have been the one to be promoted to the vice president position, she is not receiving equal pay for her positions and that top management is not recognizing its employees achievements and not rewarding them for a job well done.
Analysis
Diane has worked there for many years and she had moved up in the company and had helped it grow in many ways. She feels like she had been a great asset to the company and an amazing team player. Though with all of this in her back ground and under her belt she had lacked to show this to top management or even stand out in her group “ I wouldn’t want to take all the glory for something that was the product of team effort”. She feels that she had worked very hard to make it as far as she did and that she had sacrificed a lot for this job “when the

This is hoe employees should handle situations similar to Ms. Deters. The same thing can happen to males just as it does to females, women obtaining higher positions in the work place are also guilty of taking advantage because of their rank. This case relates to one over Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in which they refuse to hire women for higher position in the business. In the case discussed above Ms. Deters was discriminated also because she was not a “revenue producer.” This case can be related to many degrees of discrimination and will sufficiently shape future…

Lilly Ledbetter got a random memo in her mailbox showing her yearly salary and her men colleagues' yearly salary. She saw that she only earned $44,00 a year when her men colleagues earned $9,000 to $18,000 more than her even though they did the same or less amount of work. She saw that Goodyear was discriminating her based on her gender. She knew that just because she was a girl, she wasn't getting the same amount of pay as her men colleagues.…

First the demographics of the city where the company is located at shows diversity totally different from the diversity of management positions given in the company. Baltimore city is more than 50 percent African American and the surrounding metropolitan region is about 25 percent African American. With the demographics existing in Baltimore, the fact that only 4 out of 41 promotions were given to black employees over the past 9 years is suspicious. This pattern is consistent with the statistics that 1 out of seven management positions in the United States are held by African Americans. Therefore, there are some consisting inclinations to offer management positions to white employees in the most part.…

It is sad to say that as mixed cultured as the United States is there are still issues diversity in the work place. The questions of diversity have to be answered and confronted with patience and understanding. I personally believe that companies should offer diversity training, since the work place is growing and the people who are seeking jobs are not the traditional white male. I believe that it is important for workers to understand that the reason that the African female got promoted because of her talents and hard work not because of her ethnicity or her gender. Whereas the conflict theorist might see that diversity brings conflict. Instead of the woman getting the job on her own merits, she had gotten her promotion because was African and a woman. Therefore hostile could arise with her co-workers. Whereas the functionalist may see that every one provides a specific function to the workplace, and everyone has their place in the company regardless of their race, gender or age. They are where they are because that is their function in the company. They might see the promotion of the black woman unfair because that is not her place in the company. The symbolic Interactionism theorist may the women being promoted as a change in the company. They may feel that their comfort zone being threatening. They may be concerned about what is going to happen to them…

Why don’t women get as much respect and recognition from men when getting a promotion to a managerial or C.E.O type position? Because the media shows you that only men are fit for that position so to men, women “can’t do the job right.” I mean c’mon, there’s probably tons of young girls out there who have dreams to be the next president and even the drive to try and make it happen, but won’t even try because the media says it’s wrong to want something other than just a family. There is roles out there that actually do portray the woman lead as an independent strong woman with a great job and a family, but they also show her as a “bitch” who’s constantly away from her family and is only about work. Never an independent strong woman with a great job and a family who can balance both, even though it is possible in real life. No wonder most young women don’t strive to be the best they can be, they’ve been taught that if you do nothing positive comes out of it family…

Second, when I worked at Time Warner Cable there was a promotion that was going to someone in our area and there was two people going for it; a black lady (Janette) and a white lady (Jill). They both had the same time employment, work history, and work ethics but Janette was awarded the promotion because she told the manager that there wasn’t any black assistants. I felt that it shouldn’t be given to someone that pulled the race card or because of his/her race it should solely depend of the persons qualifications.…

McTavish, D., & Miller, K. (2009). Gender balance in leadership? Reform and modernization in the UK further education sector. Educational Management Administration & Leadership, 37(3), 350-365.The research question that this article attempted to answer was “Why are few women advancing into leadership positions despite a large number of women being employed into the further education sector?” (McTavish & Miller, 2009). The further education sector employs a high proportion of women yet relatively few women progress into leadership positions. The article seeks to provide explanations for this gender imbalance and argues that despite change and modernization initiatives, the further education sector remains gendered in many aspects of leadership, governance and executive practices. The only major difference between male and female academics was that female academics were twice as given to apply for promotion if supported by their line manager, and male academics were twice as likely to apply if there was an opportunity to influence college power. Also female academics were twice as likely to apply if they were obtained feedback through their staff review. There are many conclusions that were drawn from this study. Reform and structural change have definitely led to a larger number of possibilities for women. Changes in organizational policy have led to a friendlier environment for females. Women have to adjust to masculine managerial styles, such as competitiveness. In addition, even though it appears that the reforms are creating gender balance, in reality; women are still going to their stereotypical roles such as teaching and lecturing.…

I found it interesting that earn the majority of degrees and yet they are still a minority in power positions. In addition, this shows how bias the workplace is since, clearly women are more qualified for certain jobs with their degrees, and yet men still get promotions over them. Overall, I think this issue just adds to the larger conflict of being treated equally in all aspects of the…

This is all surprising to me. I was not aware of the gap in income inequality and of the lack of women in politics and management positions. Especially in a country that I always viewed as very liberal and modern. I suppose the ways hold women down or set a glass ceiling is a bit more subtle. Its really a paradigm of society that must be broken. Women in management cannot be exceptions, but just as often as men are.…

This low statistics on female being in top position in the corporate world is one angle as to why nepotism may be considered when promoting woman. In the case of the prime minister using nepotism to promote his ex-wife shows that it had a positive impact on his organisation. The fact that she possess the qualifications coupled with her being assertive and confident allowed her to embrace such a promotion. They were little to no issues about her promotion and majority of people in that organisation accepted her. The same cannot be said about the promotion that was awarded to the woman who was under qualified for the job in the ministry of health and it should how it affected that organisation negatively. Whilst the woman possess some of the qualifications like the degree, they were two critical qualification missing, she wasn’t a registered pharmacist nor had the years of experience. The lack of those qualities would not allow the woman to execute her duties efficiently and effectively and most people in the organisation felt they were taking the organisation for mockery. The people reacted negatively to this promotion by demanding that she be removed from that post, they were willing to strike and protest to achieve that. Based on both scenarios using nepotism to consider people when promoting, one must first ensure they possess the right qualifications for the task in order to avoid negative reactions from other people in the organisation. Negativity will only hinder an organisation…
