Part II: Brief Analysis of Different Family Values’ Impact on Cross-cultural Marriage
Marriage of Rose and Ted in The Joy Luck Club is a representative case of cross-cultural marriage.
1. Conflicts of Cross-cultural Marriage
“culture is a system of shared beliefs, values, customs, behaviors, and artifacts that the member of a society use to cope with their world and with one another, and that are transmitted from generation to generation through leaning”(p.11). Rose, daughter of An-mei Hsu, finds it really hard to voice her own opinion and make decisions in her marriage life with Ted. She thinks her being obedient, passive and inferior derived from her mother’s value, which contains more Chinese cultural elements.
She loses herself and just cares about what her husband wants. Her selfless way of giving unconditional love only makes Ted take more for granted and finally leads to crisis of their marriage. In the movie, she sighs for three times, but still pretends to be happy to serve her husband and does not fight back.
Rose’s sufferings make sense for the reason that the idea of obedience is one of the elements of traditional Chinese family value. Yet in the America people are taught to stand up for themselves regardless of others’ opinions. Therefore, that explains why Rose and Ted have marriage crisis.
