Liesel arrives on Himmel street terrified and not knowing what her foster parents will be like. This also sets the setting of the novel and we meet some more main characters, Hans and Rosa Hubermann. The Hubermanns were her foster parents and they were shocked that she arrived without her brother.
Liesel fails in school, and her failing in school and being put in the lower class gave her determination to learn how to read and write.

It explains how Max feels about his father, who died in war, and Hitler. It brings them closer together and it shows Liesel that you can write your own book instead of just reading them.
When the Jews were having their march through Liesel's town, her father gave a Jew a piece of bread. This put everyone in danger and he was whipped, but it also put Max at risk if they searched the house.
The Nazis recruiting Rudy when they see how he thinks and his physical capabilities, they think that he is perfect for Nazi schooling. But Rudy's father steps in a volunteers himself instead. Liesel's book floating in the river and Rudy asking for a kiss one last time. Rudy just couldn't ask anymore being told no every time hurt him and Liesel didn't notice that.
Frau Hermann giving Liesel the book to write in was very important because it saved her life in the end.
