Bruce Jackson's Chapter In Interviewing From The Classroom
Following the instrumentalists’ workshop, we went to lunch. We walked through the town center. There were children in school uniform wandering all over the town square. I assumed they got out of school early because it was a Friday. We went through a door on the side of the street and walked down a hall to the restaurant. As soon as I was in the hall, delightful smells wafted over me. After a scrumptious lunch of turkey, carrots, and potatoes, we went back to Siamsa Tíre and the instrumentalists met the musical director, Tom Hanafin. He gave a brief overview of the kinds of musical projects that take place at Siamsa Tíre and the original compositions from the theatre, then split us up into two separate groups to work two young teachers. My group’s teacher gave us sheets of pieces in letter notation. This visual instruction only provided me with what notes I should be playing. It did not offer any …show more content…
Dr. Foley asked Jonathan questions that required a detailed answer and her follow up question would generally be relevant to what Jonathan had discussed. I was also aware that while Dr. Foley knows Jonathan well and has probably heard his story before, she was attentive and interested in what he had to say. I do believe that there was some code-switching that took place during this interview, simply because this interview took place in front of a live audience and had a performative atmosphere about it (Jackson 1987). After the interview, we said goodbye to Siamsa Tíre and walked to Brogues Inn for dinner. I had a nice time chatting with Dr. Foley and my classmates. While we were waiting for our food, one of the Inn’s employees began playing the serenading us with popular song (all tending to be in a minor key) on an old, mellow-sounding piano. When going to pay for my food, I saw that he was playing off of lead

This is the students first time being adjudicated The auditorium is full of other students, teachers, and adjudicators from around the city ready to hear the product of weekly after school rehearsals throughout the school year. The chorus director looks around the auditorium and counts five former music instructors and the nostalgia of being that fourth-eighth grader on stage with those instructors floods the director's mind. She smiles, bows to the audience, turns, and gives a reassuring thumbs up to the bright, developing musicians in front of her.…

It seemed like I was wandering into a different dimension. My senses were becoming acquainted to new feelings: guttural whispers, excruciating odour, ponderous glass-like air and the cemented, pungent, taste of death! As I opened the door candlelight rose to greet me but who lit them? I was informed that the secluded house I was purchasing has been unoccupied forever.…

A loud “whoosh” echoes throughout the dark distant auditorium, and in an instant huge gleaming lights lower themselves upon the stage. The stage sits empty, lifeless, waiting, listening..listening for one to drop jaws with their all-knowing Mozart Symphony or disappoint with a piece that has no rhythm. With each day a new audience gathers around to join the stage in listening. To some it just may be a song, but to others it is a message, a chapter, a story. A story that throws all of life's up’s, all of life's downs. All of it’s good days, it’s bad days. Everything described on one sheet of paper.. But ultimately that was the audience's choice. The stage waited each day for the next performer, for the next song..With each passing person a new song, a new story told, and here is mine.…

On the night of Monday, October 16th, I had the opportunity to perform as part of the Wind Ensemble in the SHS Fall Concert. The ensemble consisted of woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Our band presented two pieces in the concert: a program and an overture. Although we were not as prepared for the concert as I’d hoped, I opine that the wind ensemble performed rather successfully.…

We sat in a circle as we learned a little about the history of meditation and spiritual journeys in other cultures. We each took a sip of tea as we learned what might be achieved through our participation, and noticed how the rest of the room started to fade to black as we stared at the center candle flame. Phame then instructed us to lie down and put the blindfolds on. He turned the music up, and everyone was quiet. The music seemed to change as I listened intently.…

When the second week of February arrived, Kayla and I left Sioux Falls around six in the morning. Arriving in Brookings a hour later, we were driven to the campus and taken to a building with a large gathering room that held other schools whom had already arrived before us. We were assigned seats in specific sections—ranging from Bass, Tenor, Alto, or Soprano. Hours of practicing went by, and we had reached the last few hours of the day. Driven to a performance hall; we ran through all the songs once more before the final…

After he left, I raced up to my room, grabbed the countless music books littering my music stand, and began to flip through them. After what seemed like hours, I started to file through the Concert and Contest Collection. After noticing that I had already played or looked at a few songs in that book, I came across a new song, Fantasy Piece, which had been heavily marked by a previous musician. This looks too easy, I thought. I want something that is at least a little challenging. I sat that book aside and decided to show Emil the next time we met.…

Andre, a socially mobile 2010 graduate of Wellborn University, has been enjoying a successful software sales career in New York City. When I arrived, I stepped out of my car for Andre to help me park (raised in Arizona, my parallel parking skills are null). He happily greeted me as he took my keys and moved my driver’s seat all the way back. Being well over 6’ tall, he towered over me. On our way to his apartment building he expressed his excitement for my association with Lori before directing me to stop in my tracks and look ahead. In front of me was an unobstructed view of The Statue of Liberty. He gleefully told me that the view from the apartment’s patio was one of the best in the city. I interviewed him in the lobby of his posh apartment…

“What do you mean all of this work is preparing me for life?” cried Melissa, one of my young trumpet players. “This is just a band concert!” The Beginning Band class had stalled in its progress toward their first performance and I could see it was time for me to convince her how preparing for a concert was about much more than playing the pitches and rhythms. There were lessons to be learned that would be applicable throughout her life, regardless of her eventual interests or careers.…
