Bryden Rose Garden: Play Analysis
On September 19, I saw the celebration of this year’s autumn equinox “Words, Water & Motion” at Bruce Bryden Rose Garden. The piece explores the traditions of words, songs, and music brought to Canada by immigrants. Preformed by six mature dancers, I felt this artistic choice could express how Canada has grown and matured. One thing that interested me about this performance is the fact that Carol Anderson choreographed it to be specific to the rose garden. The garden has three main sections that the dancers explored, with the audience stationed at the front of the garden; there was an odd sensation that we were distant, yet still close enough to feel connected to the work. With the dancers dressed in all red, there was this beautiful image that they themselves were the blooming flowers. This imagery grew as the dancers interacted with the walls of the garden, leaning on them for support, and the repeated motion of releasing …show more content…
It was clear that the relationship of the dancers between each other and with the elements/nature were very thought out and intentional. Each dancer had their own way of moving and chose to move their own way, but overall no one seemed out of place. There was a sense of unity in their diversity, which made the dancer’s choice of levels, patterns, and stylistic qualities all fit together. There was a repeated phrase that weaved in and out of the work where the dancers would be spread across the garden and perform a series of poses. The poses were organic and transitioned rather quickly, and it seemed that they were chosen by the dancer in that instant. What made this really interesting is that there were a few shapes that one dancer would make and it would sort of trickle down the line. I couldn’t tell if it was choreographed to be that way, or if it was just a coincidence, but this spontaneous connection between the dancers brought a sense of completion of the

The other male dance came in from the wing to join him and did a pose connected to him. Then, the first girl joined the two males, also in a connected pose. Lastly, the second female walked in to join, but just stepped through the dancers who were posed, and then all the dancers broke away from the pose and then stream of light went away and the whole stage was lit and all four of them began to dance…

When we first devised the Piece we decided the Dances were going to be the Hardest so we first worked on the dancing Nicola was the Choreographer so she had to think of how we did it and that turned out alright they were short and simple. I was very impressed with the acrobatics and choreography which showed great dedication on the company’s part. With my experience in Avenue Q, I know how much time and work it takes to even learn and perfect a simple dance, so I would really like to appreciate and recognize the dedication and hard work of the actors and choreography of the company. I think those elements must have been a big part of the director’s vision and that the director must…

The sole intent of the dance was for entertainment and also to connect individuals with a different culture. It was very fun to watch and the beat used was very engaging. Instead of using a really song, they used live musicians and they all wore very traditional clothing. Honestly, it was a piece that I could connect to on a more personal level. It kind of reminded me of my…

A brief moment is seen in the first subsection – where the dancers break away from the tight formation and precise synchronisation and go into spontaneous looking duets and solos In the mean time the previously religious lyrics change to “there is trouble all over this world...”. As the lyrics return to “I’ve been buked” a strong sense of community is…

I personally enjoyed this because I could understand their own individual intention for the performance a little more. After reading the piece of poetry the performers entered the stage in different costumes. The females were wearing long ruffled dresses and the males were wearing pants and a shirt that wrapped around the waist. The movement quality for this piece was heavily influenced by the ruffles on the dress. There were angulations of the spine, punching with their fist, jumping, large kicks, and walking with a twist of the right foot.…

During this assignment I learned that stories could be told without the use of words. I was surprised how easily I could understand the stories in the pieces without any dialogue, but just through body language and movements. I didn’t know before how emotional and meaningful a ballet concert could be precisely because of the lack of…

The first thing that caught my eyes was the colorful and unique dance regalia or outfit worn by the dancers. Bright colors such as yellow, orange, red, and light blue wrapped around the dancers beautifully. The older looking male dancers were wearing the feather warbonnets on the head and bustles on the back. Dancers with striking multicolored beaded and fringed outfits were crowding the dance floor. Some of the female dancers dressed simple with their colorful fringed shawls. I noticed that some dancers even had bells attached to their ankles or dance outfits that they wore. I also was told that the feathers and leathers used were inherited from their father up to their great grandfather. The sight was so magnificent – it made me excited to stay for the show.…

The lighting effects used were alternating pulses between two and three orange lights on the psyche. The light’s timing matched the song and the color matched the dancers outfit. The style of dance for this piece was jazz with a few hip hop and lyrical incorporations. Of the six elements of choreography, three stood out to me: levels, group relationships and size of movements. Similarly to “One Dance” many transitions from high to medium and low levels such as hip sways, dips, turns, kicks, rolls, drops, flips, splits, laying down, rolls, turns, leaps, flips and tilts were used. The group relations in this piece can also be juxtaposed to “Words of a Love Song”. Performing this piece took a group effort; this dance featured several roll offs and partner styled moves. At some point during the dance, everyone had a solo moment and variations of the same movs were used between the girls. For majority of the dance, large, technically advanced moves were used and the girls used levels and traveling to cover as much space as possible. The professionalism was well in this dance. There were moments where someone may have been too early or late, but no real mistakes were made. The dancers were precise and went full out. You could tell they were performers. I liked this piece, it was sassy, fun and…

I also noticed there were a lot of lifts and pointed toes when the male dancer carried and lifted his partner. Then another portion of the dance occurred after the previous dancer took their bows and the certain closed. The curtains then lifted and the lights turned on and the background turned into different colors. Then the dancers started appearing on stage and there was an abundance of dancers. The females in the performance were wearing different colors and so were the male dancers.…

While watching the "Prologue" and the "Jet Song" I could see and feel a lot of energy and stealth in the dance. The way that the Jets moved in their dance fast, but they were very light on their feet. The choreography kept me on the edge of my seat because I did not know what was going to happen next, it was a great start for the show. The next big number of the show was the "Gym Dance", which was where the Jets and the Sharks were at their school dance. It was very intriguing to watch the variation of movement between the dance the the Sharks would do and the Jets. Because the Sharks were from Puerto Rico there was a lot of latin style to the choreography. The Jets did a dance that was a more popular "American" style dance at that time, it was not as energetic as the Sharks dance was, but still had a lot of variation in the style. Because there were so many people on stage in this scene it was a little difficult to see exactly what everyone was doing. The dance looked messy at times because of the number of people on stage, but it was still a good dance. Another aspect of this piece was the difference in costumes, the women who were with the Jets had on costumes that were a fitted dress and went down to about…

‘Cherry Blossoms in Old Japan’ is a travel blog written by Don George where he demonstrates how the cherry blossom event is metaphorical for one's life. This is because he makes the analogy that our life is exactly like the life of the cherry blossoms; that there are beginnings and ends, there are highs and lows. In his blog, Don George conveys this idea in "life is a fleeting dance of moments..." This line explores the use of a metaphor as it is a comparison of life being a 'fleeting dance'.…
