Developing effective communication in health and social care

This unit is designed to help you develop your communication skills.
You will explore ways of overcoming barriers to communication and develop your own skills in one-to-one and group interactions.
In order to work with people you must be good at communicating with them.
Effective communication requires advanced practical skills in much the same way as driving a car does. Driving a car involves responding to changes in the road ahead, as well as responding to other road users. Effective communication in care involves being sensitive to feedback from others. Sometimes the people you meet may be happy but often they may feel sad, afraid, upset or anxious. You need to be able to recognise and respond appropriately to many different emotional situations. Different contexts will require you to communicate in different ways. Skilled communication requires you to make decisions as to what response would be most effective in the situation you find yourself in. Effective communication involves much more than just giving or receiving information.
