Buddhist meditation and its practice is one of the biggest parts in the Buddhist religion. It plays an important role for not only the traditional Buddhists in the eastern world, but also for the “new” Buddhists in the west. Whereas older forms of meditation were often practiced for a long time, the new forms are normally shorter. The fact that Buddhism found more and more followers in the western world over the last decades, created a need for a new form of the religion and its parts that can be practiced even in a normal day for people that work in a job. Those new forms of Buddhism still contain old traditions from the original religion, but there are new ways that allow people in the west to live the religion. Many of the old rules of Buddhism are just not practicable for someone in an industrial nation, if he or she still wants to have a normal life. A traditional Buddhist had to follow a lot of different standards like singing Pujas at least three times a day, being in a monastery for some time in his life or just trying to achieve enlightenment as his biggest goal. A western Buddhist on the contrary cannot live a life like that, and most of the “new” Buddhists do not even want to just live for the goal of enlightenment. They just search for a path to live their life and for something to hold on to. Many people are stressed in their job or their private life, and Buddhism helps them to find a balance between both parts. Meditation is a good way to find this balance during the day and in times where competition and concurrence are the biggest factors in a job. Out of my own experience as a Buddhist, I can say that meditation really helps someone to calm down and focus on specific things. It is a good method for someone to put his or her life together, and it definitely affects somebody even if it is only practiced for a short time. I meditated in groups of traditional and devout
