Ali’s duties involved being a teacher, scholar, spokesperson, organizer, and comforter to the sick and bereaved. I do not think Ali fulfilled her duties because when the man’s son called her to ask her if she could hold a service for him, she did not offer any comfort to him besides that she sends her condolences and then after she verbally attacked him for how his father was not a member of the Jewish Center. This did not come across as comforting the bereaved as she was getting angry at the son who had nothing to do with his father’s actions and just wanted to let his father go peacefully with her help, but she did not pay much attention to his concern during his rough time. Although she did take the time to give advice to people who were double her age, this was really only one of the significant duties that she fulfilled during her time at the Center.
6. I think Ali being a single Jewish woman with a cosmopolitan style affected the way that people viewed her decision because they most likely thought that she did not know what she was doing since she was not raised like the rest of them. Women also tend to be viewed as more caring and comforting compared to men, and maybe her response provoked a question as to why she was not behaving in that manner. Her single lifestyle also might have had other people thinking that she could not possibly relate to a child losing his father, which could have influenced the way she responded to the
