There has been and still is a debate over whether you should ever bug-out or not, we have been part of the debate here as well, we have chimed in on both sides of the debate in fact. Advocating for just one position is not fair, however, because it does not give anyone enough information to make a decision. Bugging out has to be planned for, gear and materials purchased and practice runs made. Leaving during a crisis brings another set of problems, which have to be dealt with. This brings us to the bug-out-bag. Do you need one?

The lights will be out no matter where you ended up, and the wilderness is not that easy to survive in with just 72-hours worth of supplies. In most cases, you would be essentially jumping from the frying pan into the fire. You must first answer the questions, where and why before deciding on whether you need a bug-out-bag as defined by many online survival websites. You obviously need emergency supplies but just how will you transport them. A bug-out-bag would be above and beyond the emergency supplies, you have stored at home. Your home supplies would include clothing, bedding, food stockpiles, jugs of water, medical items, wheelchairs, canes, walkers and so on if you have elderly members and other medical devices for those with chronic ailments. Then there are lanterns, fuel, possibly a small, or even a large generator, tools, rope, firearms, and ammunition. Not much could be carried in a bug-out-bag.
To assume you could shoulder a bag and turn left or right out your front door and get anywhere safe during a crisis is probably not reality. Your community may not be safe, and there may be other places more safe if you will, but getting there is likely more dangerous than sheltering in place. There are exceptions of course, but percentage wise, staying put is the safer
