WHAT IS BULLYING? Bullying is a repeated form of violence, aggressive intentional behavior, and involves an imbalance of power. * Understand the harmful and lasting affects of bullying and harassment.
* Know the disciplinary consequences of bullying and harassment.
* Learn how to respond to and resolve incidents of bullying and harassment peacefully.
* Learn how and who to report incidents of bullying and harassment to an adult.
* Practice 3 step response: “Stop-Walk-Talk.”

What Schools Can Do
* Implement a schoolwide system that acknowledges positive student and adult behaviors and invests in prevention.
* Model positive and appropriate behaviors and treat all students, staff, and families with compassion and respect.
* Create and establish mediation programs focusing on problem solving.
* Teach and acknowledge schoolwide behavioral expectations/core ethical values consistently and routinely sending a CLEAR message that bullying, harassment, and/or discrimination are unacceptable student or adult behaviors.
* Address incidents of bullying, harassment, and/or discrimination immediately and consistently.
* Increase supervision where bullying tends to occur. Involve volunteers and/or parents in supervising and monitoring areas.
* Implement a safe and confidential reporting system fro student victims.
* Identify resources for bullies, victims, bystanders and their families.

What Teachers Can Do In Their Classrooms
* Establish a safe and caring classroom environment by modeling schoolwide behavioral expectations/core ethical values, acknowledging students for demonstrating positive behaviors.
* Deliver 6 positives statements to 1 negative statement in working with students.
* Incorporate character education into the grade-level curriculum integrating anti-bullying themes and activities.
* Create opportunities for students to experience empathy, compassion, and respect for all.
* Teach students dispute prevention and resolution skills in addition to speaking out when they hear slurs or negative comments.
* Teach students how to report incidents of bullying, harassment, and or discrimination. Establish an “open-door” policy for all students. Role play how to respond to bullying, harassment, and discrimination.
* Be aware of seating arrangements and student involvement with bullying.

Make sure your child has a safe and loving home environment where he or she can take shelter, physically and emotionally.
