Wilco was originally a selfish man to begin with; for example when Hoselito lost his tent and tried going to Wilco. ”Wilco got straight to the point: Get out.” (141) so being on this mountain with the different climates only made that worse. “Jumik told him that help was on the way, and, after ten minutes, Wico decided to leave.” (189) instead of actually staying with them to help the three Koreans and wait for help he continued his way down the mountain only to stop and ask where to go. When “He saw that Ger and Marco were far above him, kneeling beside Jumik.” (189). There was a time when he started to hallucinate. “At one point, he saw more survivors and climbed toward them. The survivors ignored him, and, when Wilco finally reaches them, they all turned out to be rocks. They show how a person changes or even stays the same. They include this in the story because it shows the dangers of the mountain and what it does to a person or can make a person do. It shows that the mountain can change and mess with you superego. Allowing you to know the difference between good and bad. In most cases people were selfish and only cared for themselves and their own survival. In others cases they were crazy and hallucinated imagined things and didn’t realize what was happening or what they thought was happening wasn’t real. Rarely there are cases where the person is selfless they care more for other than themselves and will risk it all to help those in need.
