Choose three companies and observe how employees do their tasks. These can be three different fast-food restaurants or three entirely different types of companies, such as a fast-food restaurant, a department store, or the emergency room of a hospital.

2. Think about the differences in the operations involved in the input, operations, and output stages of these companies. Try to identify the nature of their operating systems. Are employees organized in different ways? If so, why? If possible, talk to the managers and employees in these operations to further your analysis.

3. What are the main kinds of OMM costs companies have? How does this affect their OMM operations?

4. How do companies design their operating systems to give them a competitive advantage?

The first company that I will discuss is PPG Industries. PPG Industries has several sub-divisions within the company and I will be discussing their Powder Coatings facility in Greensboro, NC. PPG’s Powder Coating facility currently makes powder coatings for John Deer, GE Washers & Dryers and many more! This facility currently has approximately 85 salaried employees including management & administration. The company operates on a 24/7 schedule which means the employees are divided between five different shifts which includes 3- 8 hour shifts (1st, 2nd & 3rd ) and 2 -12 hour weekend shift (7am to 7pm & 7pm to 7am Friday –Sunday). Even though the economy hasn’t been at its best, the company has still managing to keep the same number of employees over the last 6 years whether they are hired permantely or through

In a joint-stock company an entrepreneur raises capital by issuing stock certificates of its ownership. This involves selling shares of the stock to investors that guarantee them the right to a certain percentage of the company’s profits. For example, suppose John holds shares of Mike’s Auto Repair Shop, which is a joint stock company. These shares give John a percentage of the vote on Mike’s management decisions, board elections, etc. The shares also give John unlimited responsibility for Mike’s outstanding unpaid liabilities. In other words, unless John sells his shares of Mike’s Auto Repair Shop, he is liable in whole and in part for principal and interest obligations on bonds or other outstanding loans. Since John holds shares of a joint stock company, he is putting his own assets at risk of being liquidated if Mike were to file for bankruptcy.…

Chose to go back through a couple companies that I used to work for. I chose Subway, Main St. Liquor, and Taco Bell. I chose these because I had an inside view to the OMM for all three of these companies. The OMM for Subway was a very simple one. Their main focus was on providing excellent customer service with a team effort. They have a certain prodical for making the subs, that they want you to stick with. This will keep food costs down. For example they are suppose to put only six tomatoes on one sub. They have a weight or number amount for all meats, and veggies. With weight limits that they have put in place, this has cut down on spending on veggies and meats. Which has lowered outgoing costs and helped with finding shortages of product. The employees all have their own way of putting together a sub. Just because they have their own style they still need to stay with in the protical put forth my corpriate. They have a simple POS system to keep track of transactions.…
