According to the article called “Find Out What Makes a Good leader” by James Masktelow and Amy Carlson, they wrote that it is important to find the best leadership technique so the company can operate successfully (Masketlow &Carlson 2013). It is important to have ethical leaders in the workplace. In the article called “Ethical Leadership”, it stated that “Ethical leadership is knowing your core values and having the courage to follow through with them in all parts of your life in service of the common good” (Ethical Leadership,2013). The saying is that people are born into leadership normally pertains to people that have certain traits such as …show more content…
confidence, charisma, intelligence, and social skills. This is called the “Great Man theory”. Leaders are not made, but there are born into leaderships. An example of the “ Great Man Theory” is someone that was in military that was in charge of many people. There are several leadership theories by different philosopher( Cherry, 2013).
Early theories stated that theories of leadership are instinct and not taught. One of the theories is called trait theory. Trait theory is similar to the Great Man theory. Trait theory describes the personality and behavior of a leader. According to the trait theory, there are other characteristics that leaders might have like extraversion, self confidence, and courage. Trait theory also stated that people are born with these traits and also have the potential to be good leaders (Cherry,2013).
Other philosophers believed that leaders can be taught how to lead. Behavior theory focuses on the behavior of the leader. Leaders are evaluated on how well they dictate what needs to be accomplished and whether the employees will follow orders and how the leaders involve their employees in the decision making or supporting roles. In 1930s, Kurt Lewin designed a model for behavior leadership. It consisted of three components. The first component is the autocratic leader. This type of leader is makes decisions without involving their team. Leaders make decisions without involving their teams’ opinion because a decision has to be made …show more content…
quickly and this will have a positive outcome . Democratic leadership is the other type of leadership described on Lewin’s model. A democratic leader is when the leader gets opinions of their employees. The final component on the Lewin’s model is Laissez-faire leaders. These types of leaders do not interfere with the process of decision making of their employees. They allow their employees to make several decisions. Another type of leadership theory is contingency and situation theories. The contingency theory allows for adaptation within the workplace. The advantage of contingency theory is that the leaders have the opportunity to choose any leadership style or technique to assist with solving any situation in the workplace. Some of the situations that happen in the workplace require decisions to be made by the leader immediately or leader can get opinions of the employees(Cherry,2013). An example is Robert House model of leadership called the path of goal theory. This theory has four leadership styles. Directional leadership is when leaders give direction to the employees and let them know what role they will play on the team. House described as another type of leadership, which is supportive leadership. This type of leadership will display that they care about their employees and their well being. The achievement-oriented leadership is when the supervisor focuses only on the performance level of the group. The final leadership style in the path goal leadership style is the participant . During this process managers involve their employees with the decision making (Baack,2012).
Robert Nardelli was born a leader and decided to pursue business as a career. He graduated from Western Illnosis University in 1971, with a Bachelor in science degree in business . In 1975, he received a master degree in Business Administration. Later, he married and had four children. Nardelli is well known for his career journey. He held various management positions in large corporations such as GE Appliances, GE Lighting, and GE Transportation Systems. In 1997-2000, he was the president of GE Powers System. He was then appointed to senior vice president of Home Depot between 2000 and 2002. In 2002, he was promoted to CEO of Home Depot. According to the article called “Robert Nardelli” it stated Nardelli brought the Six Sigma style to Home Depot”(Robert Nardelli, 2013). The Six Stigma style is when these following steps to ensure that the company will operate successfully. The first step is to analyze their processes to discover where the defects could occur. The next step is to measure those defects and finally eliminate the defects( Robert Nardelli, 2013).
After Nardelli evaluated how things were conducted at Home Depot, he adopting the Six Stigma style, he made changes to the Home Depot management style.
He reconstructed how things were done in the past with home depot. He hire more managers that had military background to manage the stores because they have the skills and managers experience that he wanted t o implemented in his workplace. He hired about 300,000 employees between 2003 and 2004 to open more stores and to bring more revenue in. The sales help increase the stocks by 30 percent. Nardelli made it a priority of his to make sure that the company will give good customer service to customers. Most of his employees described Nardelli as having a strong personality, aggressiveness, and GE discipline. He resigned from being a CEO because he did not agree with the board of directors. Nardelli did not want to take advice from the share holders. He left his positions with the company owing him and his board of directors a large amount of money (Robert Nardelli, 2013).
Even though, he was a good leader left the company owing him . He was a good CEO of Home Depot. He did not involve the shareholders and the employees in his business decisions. This type of style is called autocratic leader. He used the Six Stigma style to help adapt to any situation within the company. Most employees thought he was a good leader, but did not like him as leader because he did not involve anyone in the decision making
process. He was not an ethical leader when he resigned from the company and made it were Home depot owed him and his staff (Robert Nardelli, 2013)
