“All transformational leaders are charismatic, but not all charismatic leaders are transformational. Transformational leaders are charismatic because they can articulate a compelling vision of the future and form strong emotional attachments with followers. However, this vision and these relationships are aligned with followers’ value systems and help them get their needs met.” (Hughes, el at, p.577, 2012) Bishop T. D. Jakes has also produced eight movie films Women Thou Art Loose, Winnie Mandela, Sparkles, Jumping the Broom, Heaven is for Real, Black Nativity and On the Seventh Day. I have being to the theater and seen four of the movies myself he is a great producer that is making an impact into many people lives. He is surely a charismatic leader that can influence a large crowd to follow him. He has proving to his followers that he can be trustworthy not only in the pulpit but also worldwide to produce movies that would impact people lives and bring changes as he is ministering through these films.
Bishop T.
D. Jakes effective leadership style has giving many of his followers hope through his teaching and preaching messages at the Potter’s House Ministry in Dallas, Texas. Bishop T.D. Jakes role is not just behind the pulpit but he is out giving back into the community. He has some homes build in the community and apartment buildings to help with the single parents and senior citizens who need help with housing assistance. Bishop Jakes travel to different countries to help support those who are in need of assistance globally as well. “ In October 2006 a delegation from The Potter’s House commissioned by Bishop Jakes returned to Kenya to establish a computer lab at Kawangware Primary School, the first of its kind in a slum school. “ (Jake, 2012) This school was located in Africa to help the children to develop their learning skills and teach them how to use computers to enhance their learning …show more content…
abilities.
Bishop Jakes is a true servant to our society that leads by example and also he truly serves the community and our nation by giving of himself and funding. Bishop Jakes has a team of ministers who are assistance pastors that goes out to the hospitals and visit members and family members who are sick, counsel married couples in relationships, counsel singles, minister at other church events where Bishop Jakes is not able to attend because of his schedule.
For as I am concern he is a great leader and everyone looks up to him in our society here in Dallas as a great man of God. Many of his followers are proud to be a member of his congregation. I have heard that many people go to his church to meet their soul mates, network for their businesses and etc… I remember one year he had to put out over 100’s of people out of his ministry at one time to get his point across that he is not going to put up with the mess that was spreading around in his church. I know you heard the saying “that one bad apple will spoil the bunch.” But to keep the gossip down in his church and to keep his church from getting a bad rap he put the people out that was spreading rumors. He would get up and preach on the subject matter and the people would feel guilty and leave without him even having to escort them off of the church ground. I don’t know this to be true but I heard that when Bishop Jakes leave the church he is escorted by body guards because of his reputation as a leader. I believe that these are his armor bearers who help assist the Pastor by carrying his suitcase filled with his bible, notes and money that was giving in the offering. I don’t believe that he enter acts with his congregation by shaking their hands and thanking them for attending his services. He is very distance from his congregation except for those who work very close with the Bishop.
I think that having a congregation of 30, 000 members attending your church or more. That it is good for him to be escorted by his staff to his office and car with his family. A congregation that size you can be ambushed or taking out by someone in the congregation who might not set to well with the message you preached on that day. There is a new television show that is out called “Preachers of LA” where all the preachers on the show who are top ministers with MegaFest ministries with large congregation exposing all of their shortcomings as leaders and showing how they raised money to live a lavish lifestyle off of their congregation. Bishop Jakes got up one Sunday morning and addressed this issue with his congregation that he never took any finances from his congregation to purchase his home and cars. He let them know that is the reason why he produced movies and sold books that brought him his wealth. Bishop Jakes let them know that he had these things before he came to Dallas, Texas and started pastoring. He made millions of dollars on his movie films that he produced and bestselling books as an author. He addressed this issue because this is what these big time television preachers were betraying before the world that this is how preachers get their wealth by using their congregation offerings in the church to buy them big houses, expensive cars, designer suits, and jewelry. He let the congregation know that he used their offerings to further the gospel not meet his needs.
Being a preacher there are many challenges that they face as a leader they have to live up to a certain standard that qualifies him to lead people in his congregation. Bishop Jakes main focus is to empower the people “From my pulpit I not only sought to win souls to Christ but to also challenge them that they be free from poverty, narrow-mindedness and the lack of information that can keep you still enslaved even in our contemporary society because you can’t control your destiny…Some of the challenges that we face are not just racism but they are economic empowerment, moving beyond self- hatred; its giving ourselves permission to be successful” (Walton, 2007) In 1996, he established The Potter 's House Church in Dallas, which is now the institutional headquarters of T. D. Jakes Ministries (nonprofit) and T. D. Jakes Enterprises (for-profit). A $45 million sanctuary attracts over 30,000 congregants, while the $11 million Clay Academy houses a private Christian school. Work has begun on the $150 million Capella Park, a 1,500-unit, single-family residential development. Meanwhile, investments of millions of dollars are being used to build schools and provide health care in Africa. (Walton, 2007) This is some of Bishop Jakes greatest achievement as a leader. He has invested his time and monies in establishing and empowering God’s people to do better. He is truly a visionary person who motivates his followers to make changes and cause them to grow spiritually. As we mention early some of his greatest achievement is producing movie films and writing bestselling books that help him to make millions of dollars. He is teaching his other followers who are coming behind him to lead by example.
Bishop T.D. Jakes is an authentic leader who avoids doing anything wrong before his congregation or in the public eyes. He wants his followers to see that his intention is to do what is right at all times. Bishop Jakes wants to treat other people that are up around him with dignity and respect. He is also a true servant who knows how to serve his congregation with a fresh word from the Lord to grow and develop his followers to be great leaders and successful in their lives.
According to (Hughes, el at, p.170, 2012) “The idea of servant leadership of course has been around for thousands of years. It stems at least in part from the teachings of Jesus, who instructed his disciples that servant hood is the essence of worthy leadership. Bishop Jakes has to be a good active listener to the concerns of his congregation and the people he serves in the community how he can help meet their needs. He is committed to The Potter’s House in Dallas, Texas to preach the gospel. He believes in giving back to the community by building individuals growth and development through the word of God. Last but not least he is an ethical person in leadership who believes in having good morals and integrity by during what is right at all times. Bishop T. D. Jakes holds himself to a very high ethical standard in his private and public life. He has being known to be honest, trustworthy and humble before his congregation and in his public life. Bishop Jakes leadership style is effective because he is able to influence large masses of people to follow him. He knows how to charm the people through his unique style of preaching to follow his leading. He started out preaching to women because he knew how to reach them emotionally. “In the process, he 's become the new gold standard in the evangelical world. When Jakes speaks to women, one hears part fiery Pentecostal preacher and part Barry White baritone, both ascetic and erotic. He can discuss a chaste relationship between a woman and her God with the velvet imagery of an Arabesque romance novel, encourage female congregants to eclipse societal norms mad gender ceilings that preclude positive self-actualization, and affirm the traditional ordering of the Christian family--all in one sermon. Thus he addresses the realities of a rapidly shifting cultural landscape while resonating with those who long for the good old days.” (Walton, 2007)
This is what was learned about personal leadership style “charismatic leaders seem more adept at picking up social cues and tend to be emotionally expressive, especially through such nonverbal channels as their eye contact, posture, movement, gestures, tone of voice, and facial expressions.
Charismatic leaders set high expectations while expressing confidence in their abilities and providing ongoing encouragement and support.” (Hughes, el at, 2012)
Bishop T.D. Jakes is truly one that is a charismatic leader that appeals to the emotions of his followers who were hurting women in need of emotional healing. These followers were able to build a strong bond with Bishop Jakes because they could see his vision as a solution to solving their problems.
“When you see a leader behavior (even when it may appear obviously effective or ineffective to you), you should not automatically conclude something good or bad about the leader, or what is the right way or wrong way leaders should act. You need to think about the effectiveness of that behavior in that context with those followers.” (Hughes, 2012) I believe that Bishop T.D. Jakes is an effective leader I have not heard a whole lot of negative things about him in the news media. The people here in Dallas, Texas speaks well of his leadership as a
pastor.
