The two strengths in this book embrace the three African- American pastors whose ministry spans 150 years and the biblical and theological insight of the three preachers.
The three African- American pastors whose lives span 150 year. Anyabwile emphasizes how this book unearths the unknown treasures of three significant African- American pastors whose sermons, writing and accomplishments demonstrate what God’s grace can achieve in and through those who are faithful. The title encapsulates the message of the book for we are introduced to three African- American pastors who were faithful to their
calling in spite of the many obstacles which the book does not address. To be an African- American pastoring an all-white congregation in the 17th century for thirty years, leaves me bewildered. Exactly how that was accomplished especially in an environment where slavery and racial prejudice dotted the landscape. Pastoring an all-white congregation at this time must have been not only strength of character but certainly an act of God’s grace. When in the 21st century as an African- American pastor the whites that I do pastor are because of marriage and the intolerance of whites in the church to accept biracial couples.
