Case Study The Notorious Business Professor
As the Dean of a business school, you are faced with a young business school professor who is affecting the department. He is competing for tenure and you will need to make this decision in the near future. He has several positive and negative characteristics that you need to weigh in making a tenure decision; you are scheduled to meet with him about how he can improve his chances of being granted tenure.
This case can be used to illustrate the components of the LFS (Interactional Framework) model. The chapters on power and influence, leadership traits, and leadership behaviors are all relevant.

He has been at the school for five years and has worked extremely hard to get tenure. Student ratings of his undergraduate classes are fairly solid; most students rated Steve as being an above average teacher in terms of their enjoyment, his level of knowledge, and his ability to stimulate critical thinking in class. Steve has already published several articles in some of the top management journals and has won several prestigious awards for outstanding research. Because of his research, Steve is on the fast track to becoming one of the top researchers in his field and already has a national reputation for his work. However, Steve has had a woeful track record with respect to developing and graduating PhD candidates. Steve has yet to be on a PhD dissertation committee or be an advisor to any PhD candidate in the program.

You are also aware that Steve's reputation among graduate students is becoming so notorious that it is beginning to affect the applicant pool for the graduate school. Many of the graduate students are beginning to tell applicants to go somewhere else for their degree if at all possible, and the six applicants accepted into the school last year opted to go to other programs. Although the department has never been particularly cohesive and you have never had close relationships with most of the other professors in the business school, you feel Steve's behavior has caused these relationships to be more strained than ever

    The Trait Approach assumes that some people are natural leaders and examines motives, values, personality, and skills. The Behavior Approach branches into two sections. One method to the Behavior Approach is to look at leader behavior. What does the leader actually do?     Dean, the thing he loves most about his job is helping students achieve their goals and be successful, watching students grow individually, etc. Having the ability to be able to help these students grow, is something that he really takes pride in. He takes pride in it because, it’s something that makes him extremely happy to witness. Knowing that these kids are getting the assistance that they need, reassures him that he is doing a great job. Work can become very stressful/busy for Mr. Bailey, though he does love his job there are ups and downs that go along with it. For example, seasons are busy, late nights/weekends, which leads to him dealing with crises. I commend him because he deals with these hard situations really well.     One of the first problems is when Monica Carrolls gave him the assignment. He wasn’t very experience with his job. You can tell from the situation that he didn’t have the experience to complete the task. If he had the experience he would have known what to do.
