The setting of each short novel is mostly the same, being on Yukon Territory and taking place during the Klondike Gold Rush. The difference between the settings is in “White Fang” the setting eventually changed to California, which is much warmer and gentler than the Yukon. The text structure of the text was the same in each book, both being ordered/sequence. In “Call of the Wild” the events lead up to Buck becoming officially wild. Then in “White Fang” the events eventually lead up to White Fang having a good life at the end of the book.
The themes and some details were different. One of the many themes in “Call of the Wild” is loyalty, although it was rare it was strong when it existed. Buck’s loyalty became very strong after Thornton saved him from death. Buck was unable to commit to his life in the wild until Thornton died, perhaps suggesting that his love and loyalty for the man are stronger than his ancestral urges. In “Call of the Wild” Jack London explains the story of a dog named Buck. London tells the reader the many journeys Buck went on making him wilder as time went on. In “White Fang” London tells his readers about the many ordeals White Fang had to go through in his lifetime to eventually have a good life in the end.
