Caltech Personal Statement
When I received my acceptance to Caltech, I felt both ecstatic and daunted. I knew that at Caltech I would thrive in an environment perfectly suited for my personality and desires, but I also knew that I would no longer be at the top of my class, a new experience for me. As the weeks until I start at Caltech tick past, I came to realize how brilliant my fellow Pre-Frosh (are we still Pre-Frosh?) are. I have found myself, on more than one occasion, reading the Caltech 2021 group chat, while my fellow admits discuss mathematical concepts that fly way over my head. Admittedly, I was intimidated by this, it seemed that before I even started at Caltech, I was slated on an unequal ground, and I was worried about the amount of catching needed to be …show more content…
I vowed to do whatever it took to succeed and excel at Caltech, and pursue my passion for STEM. I believe the Freshman Summer Research Institute will afford me the opportunity to level the playing field between myself and my fellow students. The program will provide me with a unique opportunity to learn new mathematics with which to advance my abilities prior to attending campus in the fall, as well as work with a brilliant researcher gaining important lab experience that I have been unable to obtain before now. Additionally, residing at Caltech along with fellow Pre-Frosh/Frosh, whatever we are, prior to the start of school, will give me the freedom to ease my way into experiencing life on my own for the first time, as well as develop bonds with my classmates and the rest of the Caltech community. Overall, the most exciting aspect of FSRI for me is the excitement of being allowed a jump start on my long-awaited Freshman year at Caltech (since the 4th grade I have been working towards this goal). I sincerely hope that I have the opportunity to attend FSRI and prepare myself for the upcoming school …show more content…
Jordan somehow managed to cultivate in me a passion for Water Polo out of an immense, burning hatred of the sport. Jordan treated us not only as his players, but as his friends, and took a personal interest in our lives, and our own personal issues, going out of his way to help, and offering personal advice from his own experiences. Jordan didn’t stay aloof from the team, as other mentors I have had in the past have done, but instead talked and joked around with us to create a unique team dynamic. Even now, while he is serving in the Coast Guard, he still wants us to keep him updated on what goes on in our lives. He was always patient and very rarely did he grow angry enough to yell, and whenever he did, it was always for good reason. He was very hands on, never hesitating to hop into the water to demonstrate what he wanted us to practice, often working one on one with players who are struggling to understand. When we needed to fix mistakes, Jordan was firm, always pushing for improvement, but never harsh. Overall, Jordan was friendly, compassionate, and held our understanding above all else. Jordan is the template to which I hold all other mentors, the ideal teacher that can maximize the efficiency with which I and others learn. In a research mentor, I hope to find somebody who cares about my life, and keeps a good sense of humor, somebody who is

I am connecting to Mitch because I had a similar, highly influential mentor, such as he had. Stan Hurley has been a salient mentor in Mitch’s short time with the CIA. Mitch has learned more in these months with Hurley than any previous time in his life. Hurley goes into every little detail, and is the most meticulous man Mitch has ever known. Hurley’s influence on Rapp evokes memories of my former basketball coach, Tim Bergstrasser. Tim was the best and most influential coach I have ever had. He coerced out team to work hard each and every time we practiced and played. Many days, I would wish for a facile practice, but was glad after practice when we worked hard and improved a lot as a team. Bergstrasser is similar to Hurley as well because he used to play college basketball, similar to how Hurley was a CIA assassin when he was younger. I think for someone to be an adequate teacher, they need to have experienced the profession that they are teaching themselves. Also, Bergstrasser is similar to Hurley because he teaches us with many real game situations. Hurley improves his trainees skills by situations they would encounter in a real mission: “Back in the woods of Virginia the idea was to find cover while Hurley fired live shots at you” (Flynn 354). Mitch was adequately prepared for missions, and he would not crumble under pressure because of his relentless training. This is exactly…

Samuel Clemens advised “Go to bed early, get up early-this is wise”, and by appreciating the soundness of his words, rarely, if ever, do I find myself in the chaos of late morning traffic. By accomplishing little everyday small tasks such as getting up early in time for a healthy breakfast or studying in motivating environments allows me to be extremely productive and effective as a student at the Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC). For the past seven months, I’ve held an environmental specialist internship at the Santa Rosa Water Department that goes hand-in-hand with my dedication and efforts at the junior college. Over the past two years, it has been my pleasure to participate in courses and to become a part of the SRJC culture. I am motivated and eager to continue to develop a strong background of calculus, general chemistry, biology and critical thinking, and expanding physics, engineering and organic chemistry. My overarching education goal is to receive a bachelors of science in environmental engineering or hydrologic science. My top three universities of choice are UC Berkley and Cal Poly for their environmental engineering programs and UC Santa Barbara for hydrologic…

They say that everything happens for a reason. Every person that comes into our life and leaves a mark on it, stays there on a long term for a reason. Some people become our work mates, others our friends, or teachers, and very few of them turn into our mentors. A mentor is a person that, by age, is more knowledgeable, has more experience and can guide with his advice a person who is willing to absorb his wisdom. From this point of view, a mentor goes far beyond the professional coaching, becoming a support in different life aspects of the person he's mentoring.…

The legacy of Loma Linda University (LLU) and how it all began, told by Richard A. Schaefer was nothing short of inspirational. Ellen G. White, the pioneer that had the vision and drive to create the foundation we are all apart of today, deserves a tremendous amount of credit. The mission, vision, and values of LLU encompasses the thoughts and theories that Ellen G. White built the empire known as LLU upon. All students have displayed similar values throughout our application process putting us here, at the heart of this wonderful plan. “Making man whole” became the motto of the university and truly encapsulates what we all strive for in life. My interest in the media world started back when I was in 7th grade. This spark first began in photography and has done nothing but grown since then. As I grew older this curiosity went from photography to television. The particular aspect of this field that draws my attention is the world of producing. Although I do not have any prior experience with producing, I know that an internship with WVUA 23 would be the perfect first step in one day becoming a producer. I learn very quickly and I will not stop something until it is completed in a proper manner. I am very eager to learn everything I can about producing and I know I will be able to do so through this internship. I enjoy working in a team-oriented setting where there is one common goal, as I am able to get along with all different types of people. I do not feel that any job is beneath me, and I am willing to do whatever possible in order to gain knowledge in…

I started taking classes part-time at OSU my junior year of high school, and full-time my senior year. By the time I graduated high school, I took 40 credit hours of classes at OSU and had a 3.81 OSU GPA. Despite the tough coursework I found time to partake in numerous extracurricular activities. When I officially joined OSU as a freshman, I joined the small biomedical science major and biological sciences group. In these groups, I have not only helped my peers with their academics, but I have given them guidance on how to simultaneously manage both their academics and fitness pursuits.…

Abilene Christian University exceeds my expectations of a Christian University. I would like to go to a school that not only calls themselves "Christian" but actually acknowledges Jesus Christ as the rock of their school and education. Personally, God comes first in my life, a university that feels the same is absolutely magnificent! My beliefs are such that it is not about a religion but rather a relationship with God through His Son Jesus Christ. I do not belong to a denomination, I belong to God only because the relationship that we have is much greater than any religious personnel could give me.…
