Camp Bow Wow
Starting a business without having a management structure in place can be a very daunting task. The Camp Bow Wow - Innovative Management for a Changing World video demonstrates how the use of good management skills and a management structure can turn a difficult allconsuming environment into a cohesive thriving business that meets the needs of the owner, the staff, the dogs and the consumer. (2012)
Camp Bow Wow is a dog daycare and boarding facility located in Boulder, Colorado. The owner, Sue Ryan, had been in management positions for many years with GE, and also in the
Oil and Gas industry. She experienced an uncomfortable management style with a previous manager, but came away …show more content…
from that experience with a lot more knowledge and appreciation for the management lessons she learned. When Sue Ryan purchased the Camp Bow Wow franchise 2 ½ years ago, she did not have a management structure, all of her staff was on the same level.
She found herself being consumed by the business which spilled over into her personal life. Sue knew that she wanted a management team with a more relaxed and flexible structure than she’d had with her previous employers. She began to promote and mentor employees that had the management potential she was looking for and she matched the skill set of the staff with positions in which they could be successful. Her manager, Candice
Sladlace, has a new understanding of what it is to be a manager. She now understands that being a manager requires a great deal of organizational skills, patience and team leading skills to help develop a successful staff and to keep a good balance between efficiency and effectiveness. One key lesson learned is that Sue’s previous negative management experience has likely played a role in the development of her human relations management approach which, according to Williams, “focuses on people, particularly the psychological and social aspects of work”: (2014, p. 34). She demonstrates this concept by understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the staff, placing them in positions where they can utilize their strengths to
be successful. Another lesson learned from the Camp Bow Wow video is that with a solid management structure in place, a once all-consuming business can thrive and be a huge success. References
