Candide: A Book Critique Candide, A novel written by Voltaire, shows many new ideas of philosophy. First published in French in the year 1759 there have been many new publications with modern translations of the original book. In 1922, the book was translated by Henry Morley, it grew to be very popular and still is to this day. The version published by Barnes and Noble This book allows students to explore ideas of the Enlightenment Era and the laws of nature shown by different philosophers during this time. The book was chosen by Mr. Boni so we can continue our learning of this very important era, and understand the ideas of these philosophers. Some may think differently on what the book is actually about depending on the way you think. Candide may be seen as a book about love, or it may teach a lesson that money does not always mean happiness. Candide tells the story of a young boy Candide, which means innocent, who had been isolated his whole life in a castle, philosophers always told him he was living the best life and there was nothing better in the outside world. He was told by his tutor Pangloss “that there is no effect without a cause”1 This means that everything happens for a reason. Candide has always believed this and always lived by it. In the beginning of the book Candide kisses Cunégonde, the baron’s daughter, they are both thrown out of the castle because that was not allowed.
After getting kicked out, Candide soon realizes that everything does not happen for the best as he was always told. He takes on many new adventures, some which are fun and some not. He meets many new people who teach him new things. The things he was taught made him think a lot and wonder if the philosophers are right. He experiences many new emotions he had never felt
