Do you get a flu shot every year? Well, it's flu season for dogs, too. Most people are warned that coughing, sneezing, and a high fever are signs of the flu. Dogs are the same. Their symptoms also include loss of appetite and achy muscles. This dog flu is called canine influenza and there are two types: H3N2 and H3N8. During flu season, you probably wash your hands a lot because the flu can spread through touch, sneezing, or coughing. The dog flu spreads the same way. Dogs in dog daycares, dog parks, and pet groomers are especially vulnerable. H3N8 started to spread in the US in 2004 and had been spreading in other countries even before that. H3N2 started to spread in the US in 2015, starting with Chicago and spreading to 25 other states.

Their studies concluded that vaccines using an inactivated or killed flu virus provide protection for a shorter time. They have also developed vaccines for the H3N2 influenza.
