The cannabis plant provides about 85 different compounds. The most predominant and well known of these compounds is tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC, which provides the psycho-active effect that marijuana consumers typically seek to enjoy. Less well-known is CBD, which is the second most abundant compound found in the cannabis plant and provides many health benefits.

One study [http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11064-005-6978-1] showed that CBD behaves in ways similar to serotonin at receptors in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that is responsible for many aspects of mood regulation. In many mental health disorders, inadequate or inefficient serotonin production plays a prominent role. The pharmaceutical industry has proliferated various medications over the last decade that attempt to treat serotonin disorders. Unfortunately, the undesired side effects from these medications can be dramatic and painful. The research suggests that CBD could provide valuable treatment in serotonin related mental disorders without harmful side effects.
Another study [http://www.nature.com/pr/journal/v64/n6/abs/pr2008260a.html] has shown possible neuro-protective effects of CBD. In this particular study a controlled test was conducted that showed CBD treatment associated with a reduction in brain damage after a brain bleeds. The implications are that CBD is capable of preventing neuron death. Imagine the possible positive implications for preventative treatment of patients genetically predisposed to …show more content…
CBD is typically consumed in oil form, either by itself or incorporated into other products. So it is possible to add the tincture oil to a smoothie or other drink as well as applying topically in the form of creams or cleansers.
In addition to the benefits listed above, the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology published a review [http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22625422] find the following benefits of CBD:
Reduces nausea and vomiting
Suppresses seizure activity
Combats psychosis disorders
Combats neurodegenerative disorders
Combats tumor and cancer cells
Combats anxiety and depression disorders
As a stand alone treatment, CBD’s health effective benefits have been found to be many. When combined with the other predominant compound in the cannabis plant, THC, the effects of CBD are magnified. There is evidence that the two ingested together enhance the overall effect of each.
We have only begun to learn about the healing power of CBD and cannabis in general. Rest assured that with the proliferation of medical and recreational cannabis across the U.S. that more research will be devoted to these very important
