The Blind Eye of Death:
The death penalty is a major topic for debate Shannon Rafferty defends in her portfolio published by Penn State entitled “Death Penalty Persuasive Essay.” She believes the penalty should be allowed because it functions as a deterrent, it provides society retribution and it is morally just. Olivia H. disagrees with use of the death penalty in her essay “Capital Punishment Is Dead wrong.” She tells about the risk of punishing the innocent, and how the states are doing irreversible acts of crime. As the authors disagree about whether the death penalty should be allowed, they have some common ground when it comes to admitting the potential for human error and in both disagreeing to the use of barbaric punishments by the government.
Capital punishment is legal in thirty-three states and illegal in seventeen states. When it comes to capital punishment Rafferty believes fear of the consequences keeps a percentage of people in line Rafferty states that the cases take so many years to finally have a verdict because of human errors. Rafferty said “the death penalty would be more effective if the legal process were carried out more quickly instead of having inmates on death row for years.” She thinks the lethal injection is not barbaric because human feel no pain but an IV that …show more content…
are used in hospitals daily. Rafferty said “inmates are first given a large dose of an anesthetic so they don’t feel any pain.”
Olivia H.
said in her article “By enforcing the death penalty a meaningful number of innocent people will be executed who otherwise would eventually be able to prove their innocence.” She thinks that by the time an inmate is convicted it’s too late to submit missed seen proof of innocence. America has long banded the electric chair along with hanging. Electric chairs and hanging caused pain and was breaking the eighth amendment. Olivia H. said some people are for the death penalty for the wrong reasons like closer for their lost love one or for deterrent of crime. Olivia H. stated “when execution day arrives, the pain is not
eased.”
Rafferty and Olivia H. both agree on certain principles when it comes to human errors or barbaric punishment. On the other hand disagree on how to apply those principles to the death penalty.
