Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION
The university as an educational institution organization has a lot of valuable information which can be provided to students such as grade release, enrollment information and university announcement As a convenient and low-cost mobile communication technology, SMS is experiencing a very rapid growth. Indeed, Philippines lead the Asia pacific region with the highest number of messages sent per user. The Caraga State University SMS based grade inquiry system was proposed to have a more convenient, faster and easier way of transactions. This study is concerned on how to provide a service to students residing in remote areas where internet connection is not available. Since the text based technology is one of the popular ways to access information, it provides the opportunity to save time and money, and in addition it improves the way of communication. It also helps the students access the information in anytime-anywhere basis at their own convenient time. This proposed system enables the student to save time, money and effort by just typing in at their mobile phone the keyword together with their ID number and password. Furthermore, these systems provide a convenient way of inquiring grade with just press and send way. The proposed system is offering the SMS service which can be used by all mobile phones. The user only sends the SMS to the system and the system will reply the answer back to the user as an SMS also.
1.1STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM: It seeks to answer the following general problem: How can the inquiry of grade be available to students living in places without internet connection? Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions: 1. How to minimize the expenses of the students. 2. What are the key requirements and functionalities needed to develop in the proposed system? 3. What is the effect of the proposed system to the users?
1.2 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY: The general objective of this study is to develop an SMS based system that will help the students accessed in anytime-anywhere basis. The specific goals are the following: 1. Develop a system which is not costly to students. 2. Develop a system prototype containing key requirements and functionalities. 3. Test the proposed system.
1.3 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY: The proposed system aimed to benefit the following: THE UNIVERSITY The Caraga State University is the main beneficiary of the system; CSU would be adapting the new innovation in technology at par with other universities in the country. The university can provide the information to its clientele thru SMS service which in turn makes the transaction easier and faster. THE STUDENTS The students will benefit by means of not having hard time searching for computer connected to the internet just to view their grades. Through this system they can inquire their grades in anytime-anywhere basis in a much cheaper cost. 1.4 SCOPE AND LIMITATION: This study concentrates only on the development of inquiring grades via SMS. Thru the Caraga State University SMS based grade inquiry system, students may not have hard time finding computer connected to the internet. Inquiring grade is just a text away spending one peso of your load. This study does not aim to replace the current web-based system of the university but rather an alternative when a student doesn’t have a computer connected to the internet. The student in inquiring grade may simply type in his mobile phone the keyword together with his student ID and password. The password is the one printed in the official receipt upon paying the tuition fee. Password is needed to protect the SMS service. Every user must send the correct student ID and password to access the grade inquiry system. This will prevent the system from unauthorized users.
CHAPTER III METHODOLOGY This chapter covers about research methodology on how to achieve the objective of the study. ANALYSIS TO MINIMIZE THE COSTLY EXPENSES OF THE STUDENTS • Conduct an interview with the students on how much they spent on the internet shops just to view their grades. DEVELOP A SYSTEM PROTOTYPE CONTAINING KEY REQUIREMENTS AND FUNCTIONALITIES • Design a good database to offer an organized mechanism for storing , managing and retrieving information • Design software to read and send SMS. • Provide a SIM card, one SIM card from any cellular operator • Provide a mobile phone with modem built in or GSM modem to support communication between handset and computer • Provide a computer set • Cable data or other media (Bluetooth, infrared); to connect mobile phone or GSM modem to one computer. • LAN connection to database server should be provided for connectivity of source from the actual database. TEST THE PROPOSED SYSTEM This would be done by allowing a specific number of students to use the proposed system and gather their feedbacks.
