Richelieu went to school in Paris, at the College De Navarre. After that he attended military school, then went on to study theology at the college de Calvi.
In 1606 he was elected Secretary of State for foreign affairs. In 1622 After Richelieu's progression through the church and through politics he was elected by the king to become Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church and was granted the position by Pope Gregory XV.
One event that made the people of France dislike Cardinal Richelieu, was the attack on the Huguenots. The Huguenots were French Protestants who were threatening France’s safety. In an attempt to raise France’s international status, Richelieu was at first willing to tolerate the Huguenots if they were loyal to France.
