ENGL1030 Name: Kayla Savage Dropbox Assignment: Casablanca and Citizen Kane Watch selected scenes from Casablanca and Citizen Kane, and answer the following questions. Type your responses in the space following each question or writing topic. Please use specific examples and precise language, including the terminology of filmmaking you have learned in this course. If the sequence opens with a “master” or “establishing” shot, use that terminology instead of just saying, “The first shot is of . . . .” If there is considerable use of a moving camera, use such terms as “tracking” or “dolly” or “pan” to describe that movement. 1. Watch the sequence near the beginning of Casablanca from when we first see the “Rick’s Café Americáin sign. (This is a night-time shot and does not have an airplane in it.) The sequence begins with the sign above the door and ends when we first see Rick’s face. This sequence is about 2.5 minutes long. (On my DVD, this is Chapter/Scene 4.) a. Count the number of shots. If you find this difficult to do, turning the sound off may help, but you will need to both listen to and watch the sequence to answer other parts of this question. (Be sure you know the general definition of “shot.”) (1) How many shots are there?
I counted from ten to thirteen shots. (2) Describe the use of the camera, including camera angle and movement and the types of shots used in this short sequence.
There were a couple of jump cut shots, when Sam was playing the piano and singing while it jumped over to was conversating with friends and while Rick is talking with his friend outside of the cafe’ while a plane is taking off. The camera used some eye-line match cut where the attention was focused on what Rick and his friend are talking about. The angle and camera movement was mainly focused on Rick and his surroundings. b. Discuss the use of at least three of the conventions of continuity editing used in this sequence

This cuts to a dark medium-wide shot of what appears like a silhouette of the character. With a pan, it remains dark until a desk light is turned on, revealing a crowded and seemingly disorganized office space. Another cut reveals a medium-close shot of the main character with overhead lighting that is supposed to be coming solely from the desk lamp. This relatively stationary shot, only panning when the characters moves, focuses on the distraught character trying to comfort and make sense of the proceeding events to the clip. This relatively dialogue free shot reveals not much to the audience; only that this character would like to record observations. This shot is very crowded with visuals which also add to the confusing theme being portrayed. One final cut to a close up shot with similar lighting finally gives the audience insight into the mind of the character as they begin noting their observations. This shot is clear from distractions and gives the audience some relief and closure that has been build up with the proceeding cuts. Altogether there are 5 different shots being presented, all of which have very distinct length and composure that proceed to confusion and closure to the audience, as well as a smooth development…

Shots are an important part of any movie or show. Shots, in addition to lighting and angles, can provoke powerful reactions in the audience. Steven Spielberg is well known for his cinematographic style. One of the movies he is best known for is Jaws. Three of the many interesting shots were the shark’s point of view, the zolly, and the shots of Captain Quint preparing for the shark. All three instigate suspense and keep the audience on the edge of their seats.…

Casablanca was a romantic film produced in 1942. Internet Movie Database summarizes Casablanca as “Rick Blaine, who owns a night club in Casablanca, discovers his old flame Ilsa is in town with her husband, Victor Laszlo. Laszlo is a famed rebel, and with Germans on his tail, Ilsa knows Rick can help them get out of the country.” Rick Blaine is the main character and he is described as cynical and doesn’t have a care in the world. He doesn’t even care for his lover Yvonne. He definitely doesn’t care about World War II happening in his country. Ilsa is an important character as well and is obviously loves her husband. Yet, there is a bit of a love triangle among…

The camera often looked up at Rick, showing him as an empowering figure. This was made even more impressive by the fact that when standing next to someone else, Rick looked around 5'5. The camera also zoomed in on the conversations and especially arguments between people and looked at them from a head on angle which gave the viewer a feeling of closeness within the story. Some of the shots were also amazingly coordinated with the music to the movie, which added a lot of effect. A scene that jumps out is when Rick is in his office and he sees Ilsa come in the window. The music jumps as the camera zooms in on Ilsa. It gives the audience the same feeling of surprise that was trying to be portrayed with Rick. The camera also used fades to show a flashback coming. This made it clear to the viewer what was going on, which is often an issue in other movies, even today. The camera also used things happening in the background to fade to a new scene. This happened in a scene in the bar when Rick was smoking a cigarette and the camera used the smoke to fade to a flashback. The use of shots gave the movie a sense of dramatic effect that would not have been there with the basic…
