In a care setting, there are many factors that impact communication in a daycare, a nursery, a hospital and a residential home. There are 5 main factors contributing to this, these are: emotions, positioning, environmental, special needs and care values. An emotion is a strong feeling towards something,- these can alter the effectiveness of communication, it can either inhibit or support it. For example, this could be happiness as it could either inhibit or support communication depending on the circumstances. If a care worker shows no empathy to the pwus during a conversation, they may feel like they aren’t understood or cared for, which may result in them not wanting to share with the care worker how they feel. For example, if a patient in a hospital was opening up about their feelings and emotions regarding their mental illness and the care worker was not showing any change in facial expressions or concern then the patient may not want to return and that their problems do not matter; this could ultimately lead to their mental health worsening. If the care worker shows too much empathy towards the patient then they may feel like they aren’t being taken seriously and that their care worker is behaving in a patronising way towards them. This means that all service users have the right to choice, respect and dignity; it also means that service users have the right to make their own decisions on the choices they make. Service users also have the right to believe in whatever they want to believe, whether it is religion, dietary requirements etc, the care workers should support the individuals to live however they want to live and respect each and every decision they make as long as it is not harming them or anyone else.
