This provides the platform for the counselor to build a tentative Life Portrait. According to Savickas (2011), “the counselors job is not to interpret the stories but rather help clients listen for wisdom they are authoring” about self, setting, and the script they aspire to live (p 181). Effective counselors first gain an understanding of what their client want to achieve. Using the clients intent systematically apply the fitting career intervention i.e. vocational guidance, career education, and or coaching. Listening for themes, barriers, effects of family and personal common realities to empower the self-concept of the client to act on what is necessary to accomplish their career aspirations and intent as it relevant to life and job…
Every year millions of college students ' worldwide graduate from college in hopes of obtaining a position in their career field of choice; however a lot of these students do not have a plan of action to actually help them find their career and achieve their goals. So much emphasis is put on college graduates going out and finding a "job", but little focus is put on helping them find a "career." "A five year career plan is a road map that allows for progress tracking, and development of solutions or alternate courses of action (Crump, 2009)." From personal experience I have realized that the chances of achieving my personal and career goals are increased of I actually write them out as a plan. In this paper I will discuss my career goals and…
It is our mission to enhance ones self discovery, future awareness and career responsiveness among all middle school students. Our main focus is self exploration, specifically “vocational alternatives” to the four year college track. As teens realize that traditional educational goals are beyond their reach, many of them begin to lose inspiration with their future endeavors. These students feel that school is not important as they often become “high school drop outs” or due to environmental stressors, have limited goals and aspirations for their future. As a result, they are unable to participate in vocational opportunities that would have been beneficial and empowering in their lives.…
There is a need for the student to finish school with the educational background necessary to make a sound decision with his or her future. This can be achieved through the student becoming a free and self-reliant learner. It is important for the student to exhibit the drive to progress with education and maximize his or her personal potential. School counselors can set up career fairs that will have professionals from a variety of fields. This could help students value their education and become familiar with the educational background needed to fulfill their desired careers.…
All children are required to graduate high school, but pursuing higher education is only recommended. While high school curriculum is designed to prepare students for higher education, students learn essential career readiness skills while enrolling in higher education classes. Since students are not obliged to pursue higher education, many students who decide not to continue their education lack the skills necessary for future careers. While some schools hope to implement career readiness for either all their students or for only the students who do not wish to pursue college, other schools do not want to offer career readiness programs as they believe that it offers incentives for students not to attend college. Schools should require all students to take career readiness classes as…

There is much debate about whether a high school curriculum should be career based or whether the courses should be geared more towards college preparation. If students receive a majority of their curriculum in their core courses to help for college preparation, plus have the opportunity to take a few career based courses, I believe that it will set a strong foundation for college training in the career of their choice. If schools allow students to focus more on career training in high school rather than focusing on college preparation today’s students may not have the strong foundation that college coursework requires to be successful.…
While online schooling and AP class create pathways to success in both college and careers, Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs provides students with higher success in both the classroom, and the workforce. Unlike online schooling and AP classes, CTE programs allow students the opportunity to challenge themselves and provide them with, “...the academic, technical, and employability skills and knowledge to pursue...and enter a career field…”(Brand et al. 7). As soon as students begin their freshman year of high school, they are pressured into choosing a career field they are interested in. This creates numerous problems when selecting future colleges and careers, because a majority of students are not given the opportunity to receive hands-on…

The career that I have literally chosen is the automotive service technician and mechanics career. The reason why I chose this career it’s because… Well actually I have plenty and many reasons to choose from because I am very passionate about this career and I have lived through it my entire life. One reason is that Auto Mechanics is because to me it’s an interesting field to me. I decided to explore the topic a little more to get a better understanding of what it would take to become a successful automotive technician . I have lived through the auto mechanics field pretty much all through my life. Well actually since I have been born. The reason of this is very simple. That is because my very own dad is an auto mechanic himself. Well actually to be more exact, he owns his own auto mechanic shop. Since I was little I have always helped him at his work because I have always enjoyed working with vehicles. Since the very first day that I started working with him I already knew that the automotive field was the job for me. Since I was a baby my very own parents use to tell me that I would disappear out of their sight. And when they used to find me I used to be playing with the tools besides my dad helping him out. I have pretty much made my mind up about actually going further in this career. Not only because I actually enjoy doing that job but also because of the pay check that you receive. Well actually that is a bonus in it. It does matter to me the money that you earn in it but not as much as I like doing the activity of interacting and working with automobiles. I have faith in me that one day I am not only going to fix cars, but I am also going to own my own shop myself.…
The College Board document encourages college counseling and career counseling to be integrated in a program of instruction that starts in elementary school. College and career counseling at elementary school! At first thought this seems too early. However, the skills needed to be effective in the workforce require a solid foundation in reading, writing and basic math. These basic skills are all learned in elementary school and are essential in a modern economy. In the 21st Century the journey into a career can be far more complicated and starting college and career counseling early is becoming essential. My career search would have greatly benefited from having received career counseling earlier. When I graduated from college, I had…
We live in an increasing global economy our open market is becoming international. In the field of international business, there are various jobs, such as Investment advisor, operations manager, supply chain management, international sales and shipping management. With our changing economy, I plan to change and evolve myself also. One day I hope to work in a company where I will be able to coordinate activities and resources across international boundaries, and represent my company by purchasing, selling and managing product logistics outside of our country. Opening and expanding my mind to new places and things, and making my business better by becoming an international banking manager will give me the opportunity to become known worldwide in my field. However, before becoming an international banking manager I will need to have degree in international business, have communicative and persuasive skills, organization, and the ability to analyze and solve complex problems.…
While most people may focus on the academic side of a scholar, I feel there should be a much broader definition. I would define a scholar as an individual that is dedicated to their education, uses their God-given talents for the benefit of others, and pushes themself in all of their endeavors whether it is spiritual, physical, or mental. This would promote a much more well-rounded person. Placing more emphasis on an individual’s drive, ethics, and integrity in addition to their grades or test scores is important to being a scholar. I feel that this would promote utilizing what is being learned rather than simply taking a test over the material and forgetting it.…
I hope to pursue a career in being a vet. My whole life I’ve always wanted to help out animals. Ever since I was a little kid, I always loved animals and I’ve realized that my passion in life is to become a vet. A vet is a medical professional who protects and takes care of animals and people. It is important to understand the education or training, skills or talents needed, salary and benefits offered, and the duties for a particular career when making this decision.…
By the late 20th century, a wide range of choices (especially in the range of potential professions) and more widespread education had allowed it to become possible to plan (or design) a career: in this respect the careers of the career counselor and of the career advisor have grown up. It is also not uncommon for adults in the late 20th/early 21st centuries to have dual…
