Carol's Monologue
For as long as Carol could remember her father had hardly ever been around. He would come back once every two weeks usually drunk. Her siblings along with her dreaded his arrival. One day, while out collecting, chicken eggs, she heard a car pull up. Peeking out the door, to her surprise, it was her father. Moreover, it had only been three days since he’d left. It was unusual for him to be back this early so after collecting eggs she went and got her five older siblings and went to the house. When she got to the house her mother was in the kitchen preparing dinner and her father was in the back room banging around and knocking stuff over. Her mother hastily ordered them to sit down and eat dinner. After a couple minutes her father emerged …show more content…
They jumped on bareback with only halters on and headed to the tree rows. “Dad’s going to get mad if we do this again.” said Lenny. “He’ll get over it, let’s go!” replied Carol. So all six of them proceeded to the tree rows. By this time it was already completely dark and the only light was from the glow of the big round moon. They decided to play tag. They weaved through the trees on their ponies and horses while giggling the whole time. They had so much fun they did not notice they had worn away the grass and packed the ground and the next day they were in …show more content…

Soon everyone followed and Carol was the last. As she slowly lagged along behind them her mother’s beloved white rooster came proudly strutting around the house. Carol and her siblings hated that chicken because it would attack them and peck, but they could never harm it because their mother would be devastated. She decided to ignore him and kept walking. After a couple steps he came racing after her. In a panic, she grabbed a board on the ground and swung at the mean old rooster. She made contact and the rooster let out a squawk as he flew through the air and hit the ground motionless. While running over to him, Carol hoped he was still alive or she knew she would really be in trouble. Slowly she went over to the rooster and he was still not moving by this time her brother had returned with a shovel. In a panicky voice she said “ I think I killed mom’s chicken.” His eyes got big as he looked over at the white rooster. Not knowing what to do he went and picked it up and threw it over the creek bank. “We’ll just leave him here. I do not know what else to

The year was 1953. It was a cool, crisp twenty-ninth of October. Usually, after their chores and homework were done, Kathy, 8, and her brother Jonathan, 15, along with their friend May, 11, and her cousin Adam, 13, all went to Joe’s Arcade, the local hangout of Leaport, North Carolina. Instead, they all decided to meet at the end of their dead end street, Farrow Avenue, and go for a walk through the woods. They were all bored since the arcade was too crowded and supper wasn’t ready yet. Their town was a small town, so there wasn’t any other places to go besides the woods. Plus, the old, burned O’Leary house was out there.…
