As far as Self-Concepts I believe Lane Bryant has been able to give a positive spin to how people look at their bodies. When it comes to Self-Esteem, Lane Bryant also induces “Individualism” and allows people to group together to fight off the negativities associated with the “Plus Size” women label. Finally, the company also increases Self-Consciousness because it allows women more choices and options as far as the clothes they like.
2. Discuss the real-world changes that appear to be occurring with respect to media images of women. What are the reasons for this?
Now and days models are more diverse and not just one size only. Today, there are more and more “Plus-Size” models that seem to becoming more of the norm. Companies are starting to notice the huge market that has been neglected for decades. Fashion capitals like Italy, are now beginning to actually ban “Size-0” models and creating a more “positive” body campaigns that create awareness to the dangers of eating disorders that can be influenced by media distortions.
3. How do you reconcile the greater degree of acceptance of plus-size women with the parallel emphasis our society continues to place on thinness (as evidenced by the billions we spend on diet products, exercise, and so on)?
For one, society should begin to learn about the value of emphasizing health over just looks. More and more people are beginning to confuse unhealthy dieting routines with fitness and looking “thin.” Given the growing obesity pandemic, society should be more accepting of health lifestyles and less accepting of merely reaching a certain weight or look.
