1. What is the problem? What was Foster’s intention in sending the email?
Answer: The main problem was the interpretation of Charles’ email from the different recipients. Charles’ first intention was to get an idea from Richard on what he should do about the problem.

2. Who cares about the problem? How did each recipient interpret the email?
Answer: All the recipients care about the problem. For Richard, Charles’ email was a statement of what was happening with the company’s product, not a informal email asking his opinion about Charles’ thoughts. For Maurice, the problem was with the JV and the fact that they weren’t following the security standard procedure.

3. How did the problem come about? Provide some background. What cultural assumptions underlie Foster’s email and the phone call and email from Hassan?
Answer: Although Charles had the best of the intentions when he sent the email to Richard, he didn’t use the best approach by writing an informal email without being specific that the email was based only in assumption and he only wanted Richard’s opinion about the ideas. For Hassam if Charles had any complaints about Hassam’s business a direct phone call would be better than an email. Hassam took all Charles’ assumptions (that he understood as a statement from Charles) and a treat to his business.

4. What are the opportunities for solving the problem? How should Foster respond to Hassan?
Answer: Charles had the opportunity to not only solve all the communication misunderstood by saying to Hassam that those were only assumption from a sales force person point of view and at any point were necessarily true. But more than that, Charles had the opportunity to deal with the product issue directly without the information had to pass through other recipients.
