Case Study: Madam Chan, A Department Of Health
Madam Chan is a 72 years old lady who suffered from some physical condition recently. She usually be alone in her home and cannot buy food from markets and cook them as usual due to not being able to go up and down stair which is the only method for her to go out and back home. With the reason of it, her home is full of tin food, instant food, preserved food as well as the left-over food. Besides diminishing of life-space due to reduced mobility, the nutritional problem is also one of the concern because of the physical condition. Madam Chan lost weight from 53kg to 48kg in 3.5 months, her BMI is 18.1 which indicates underweight (Chinese Community Health Resource Center, 2012). Also, her blood pressure record is 148/82, which is hypertension. Moreover, she suffered from diarrhea after taking cow’s milk. Therefore, the intervention must concern on the problem of losing weight, hypertension as well as losing ability to go out.

With reference to the Healthy Eating Food Pyramid for Elderly1 (Department of Health, 2014), Madam Chan’s basic need of nutrient can be assessed. For example, she should intake about 240ml of milk or alternatives, 0.5 bowl of vegetable and 3-5 bowls of grains daily, 2 serving of fruit, 5-6 taels of meat, fish, egg or alternatives as well as little oil, salt and sugar. This gives a brief concept of what Madam Chan should eat each day.
