I feel that the offender did know Martha and what her normal routine was every day because the dog never barks. There is also the fact that he knew what time she would be home and getting ready for bed as well as how to get into the house without being seen by the nosey neighbor. There is also the fact that he cut himself pretty bad going into the house which means he will need to get medical assists and that he is within a block and half to maybe two blocks from her house. Therefore, once they get a suspect they can check him for a cut or cuts as well as do a DNA test because he left blood on the scene.
This type of rapist would be classified as an opportunistic rapist because the crime scene was very sloppy and not planned out.
