Therapy Dog Attack Summary
This article talks about therapy dogs helping children testify against their attackers. In this particular story it talks about a dog named Argos helping a 11 year old girl Devin Connors who was raped when she was 8 years old by her mother’s boyfriend. Since the boyfriend pleaded guilty to the rape she didn’t even have to testify at all but she decided she wanted to tell what happened. In order for a dog to be a therapy dog they have to be walk quietly on a leash,Interact well with strangers, and be calm in unpredictable situations and for a child to be with one of the dogs the can’t be allergic, Needs parental permission and can’t be afraid of dogs. The dogs are also used for therapy sessions during counseling sessions they help the children
relax so they are able to talk to their therapists.
The book talks about other ways to help children testify in cart such as a shield or screen to separate the child and defendant. Or their testimony be recorded and televised to the court so the child doesn’t actually have to be in the courtroom. The child can have someone standing next to them as a support them such as the dog in the article and the judge can make the courtroom closed to protect their privacy.
This article is kind of uplifting because dogs are used to help us in many different ways and they seem happy to do it for instance my dog always knows if i’m having a bad day because he keeps trying to make me pet him or he brings his toys to me and makes me play with him. They know if someone needs help and they are so happy to help you out. I never knew that dogs could be used in court like this. But it seems helpful because little children would be scared if they had to speak in front of a courtroom and they may be afraid to talk about what happened in front of strangers they don’t know but i’m sure once that dog is next to them licking their hand or their head is on their lap they feel so relaxed. It makes me appreciate my dog a lot more
