Catholic Church Helping The Homeless Essay
Pope Francis said that, “The church must speak truthfully and also by her witness: the witness of poverty. If a believer speaks about poverty or the homeless and lives like a pharaoh, this is not good.” The Catholic Church consistently teaches about helping the poor and vulnerable but as individuals, are people truly acting upon this? In our society, homelessness has become a major crisis; it is not only a political, economic, and social issue but also a moral issue. Through the Scriptures, the Ten Building Blocks of Catholic Social Teachings, and the Western vs Biblical Justice, individuals are able to see how Christians should live. From these teachings there should be a great distinction between how today’s society sees the homeless and how Christians are supposed to see them. Society is trying to hide the fact that …show more content…
If they’re confronted, they tend to say things like, “I didn’t want to pry into their life,” or, “It’s none of my business” or, “How can I afford to help anyone, when I don't have many things myself?” The Ten Building Blocks of Catholic Social Teaching help make direct choices, and teach how one should act as followers of Christ. One Principle is “The Principle of Preferential Protection for the Poor and Vulnerable”; our society segregates the rich and the poor, it instructs us to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first. If people continue to think only of themselves, how can any moral issue be solved? When people begin to think of others and humble themselves, it is an act of love and respect. By putting the needs of the homeless first, not only would they receive the help they need but it shows that society cares. Through love people can make a difference in this world. Love is the center of solving a majority of our world’s problems. Not only should Catholics and Christians follow this but every human being should as

The second chapter is an overview of societal methods of dealing with poverty and homelessness from the time of Martin Luther and after. As Gowen says “the charity activists, like Martin Luther 350 years earlier, were nostalgic for a radiant past when rich and poor had interacted more intimately, with less overt conflict” (Gowen/HHB, pg 35) To add to world history, there is also specific history about San Francisco, including the program called Matrix of the Frank Jordan era through “Care Not Cash”. Gowan discusses the dialog around the constructions of poverty, a moral viewpoint where sin is the cause, a disease viewpoint, and a systemic viewpoint. She points out that these discourses are taken up not only by authorities but also by homeless people themselves. Somebody who is considered a bad boy is somebody who is buying into the sin-talk viewpoint; the sick-talk viewpoint is common among people who have left the street through 12-step recovery; system talk is formulated in various ways, including identification with veterans who have been abandoned by the system. The theories of John Locke play a key role in the previous sentence. As Locke’s theories state that each person should be guaranteed “life, liberty, and estate.” The veterans who were left with nothing by the government and had to survive off of nothing did not fall under Locke’s theory, not given a type of life they needed, not given the same liberty as the rest of the people who are not considered homeless, and not given any estate to call their own like a rich man does.…

By this statement they are able to remove the poor off the streets and prevent themselves or their citizens from being disturbed. By having it written on a resolution, the likelihood on the completion of the action increases (POV). Spanish humanist, Juan Luis Vives brings a sympathetic tone in his speech when addressing the poor, and adds on to the idea that the poor deserve aid. He states, “Some know they have a duty of charity to the poor” and uses key words like “good intentions” (Doc 3). Highlighting it is one’s duty to look after and care for the poor due to the appalling living conditions that they lived in. In Document 9, there is a picture of a man at the door of his house, giving alms to the beggars. This expresses Rembrandt van Rijn sympathetic view towards beggars as the picture depicts the man calmly giving the money to the beggars without any sings of disgust but rather support. Perhaps, the sympathy was evoked by seeing the condition of the family resulting in the feeling that one must give alms and showing a reason as to why many feel a need for a sympathetic gesture to the poor. Lastly, Vincent de Paul, another Catholic priest shows his support to the poor by saying in speech to his order that there should be a…

No matter how many charities are available for people to donate to, they are often careless and forgetful. This problem stems from laziness and a lack of motivation to be involved. Today, poverty is prevalent throughout the world with 80% of humanity living on less than $10 a day. However, this isn’t the first time poverty is seen so frequently in society. During the Renaissance, approximately 50% of Europe’s population lived at a subsistence level with 80% of Europeans facing possible starvation in times of peril. In the midst of this time period, as poverty ran rampant it led to differing attitudes towards helping the poor as well as the concept of poverty. Poverty was viewed by the upper class as well as humanists as a negative influence to society due to characteristics like idleness which was thought to be the beginning of all evils. Meanwhile, religious officials like the clergy as well as artists thought that the poor should be assisted for spiritual benefits and believed that aiding the poor was only…

Homelessness has been an economic problem forever. During the 17th century homelessness was seen as character deficiency. Those under God's Grace would automatically be given the necessary needs to live comfortably. Regardless of the situation, individuals were wealthy in the eyes of the community due to faith. For those not under the oath of God, there were different consequences. (Fischer Robert. The History of Homelessness in America 1640s to Present. Plymouth Congregational Church.2011.Web.) People were believed to be deserving of their condition. Nonbelievers had it rough because of the lack of faith in God. The community held the believers ultimately responsible for the wellbeing of the circumstances.…

As a group, we challenged group bias by discussing the homeless research we had previously encountered. We had all came across viral internet videos of homeless people who were just in the business of loitering and collecting free money for drugs or other unhealthy activities. We became hesitant and unsure if we wanted to help the homeless community because of the negative stereotype. But, Chris brought up a very strong point he said “Well at the end of the day it doesn't matter because no human being deserves to be out in the cold without proper layering. We just will choose not give money instead give them resources that will make a difference in the long term”…

Homelessness is a subject that has many different views, and opinions. It is a subject that gets little attention and funding in order to broaden its truth and its needs to the public eye. Homelessness is a subject that is a convenient place to put unsolved unwanted social and political problems within our communities. Its depth in our society is not completely known and or understood; therefore its solution continues to be a mystery delayed. The stigmatisms are many and the sad but true community laws, rules, and quick fixes are anything but kind in the mind of a compassionate worker. The research of homelessness doesn 't even begin to reach into the subject in a fair and or complex way; however I will attempt to bring into the light what different truths, and community solutions have been given on the subject of homelessness.…

Homelessness in America is more serious than people think. There are more vacant homes in America than homeless people. That should set off alarms in people’s heads. Also, not just old men and women are homeless. The LGBTQ community has a lot of people out on the street, mostly due to the lack of acceptance they receive from other people. There’s also a huge risk for transgenders in shelters, some even being turned away and banned from some homes (LGBT Homeless 1). 20% of the whole homeless population is LGBTQ, which might not sound like a lot, but that equals to a lot. It seems that the portion of the LGBTQ community that is homeless are more prone to abuse and mistreatment as well. 58.7% of the LGBTQ youth have been sexually assaulted or victimized. That is a sickening number. The suicide rate is also very high, it being around 62%. It’s also shown that homeless heterosexuals aren’t prone like the LGBTQ are, which is also a sad thing to hear (LGBT Homeless 1).…
