Unwanted material present in air is referred as air pollution. The causes of air pollution may be * Natural process: For instance volcanic eruption and forest fire because of lightening. * Man- made process: for instance combustion of fossil fuels.
Most of the air pollution is man – made. In metropolitan areas, combustion of petrol and its byproducts result in release of air pollutant. Incomplete combustion releases a toxic compound called carbon monoxide in to atmosphere. Natural process may be dangerous at times but not always.
Sources of air pollution:
Air pollution sources are broadly classified into two types namely * Anthropogenic sources * Combustion of fuel in motor vehicles * Use of hair spray, paints and some solvents * Methane release from landfills where wastes are deposited * Smoke from power plant stack * Incineration of waste materials * Burn practice in forestry management * Toxic gas release * Use of nuclear weapons * Natural sources * Dust from natural process * Forest fire or wild fire smoke release smoke, dust and carbon monoxide * Earth’s crust radioactive decay of Radon * Methane release from animal digestion, for instance cattle food * Volcanic eruption release sulfur, particulates and chlorine compounds * Vegetation release volatile organic compounds
Effect of air pollution:
Clinical studies show more number of people die due to air pollution long term exposure. General ill effects induced by air pollution are as follows. * Cough * Wheezing * Breathing trouble * Respiration problem * Blood circulation problem * Lung disorder * Asthma * Vascular dysfunction * Skin irritation * Invisibility * Improper vision * Thrombus formation * Cardiovascular morbidity * Fatality * Premature deaths * Anthrax
