If raised in the South, you saw the war as a way to relieve yourself from the oppressive North, but if raised in the North, you saw the war as a rebellious act against your own brothers who fought alongside you in the rebellion against the British. Southerners had lived in the lifestyle of owning slaves and controlling their “property” for so long that they had become blind to their own sin and didn’t realize that they had developed an entirely new view upon themselves and the word, Southern. From the North, the people knew the acts of the South so well that they, too, became blind to their own sins and didn’t realize they were taking part in the slavery community as well because once a Black person migrated towards the North to pursue the freedom they deserve, they were still treated as if they had never left the South. The Nation of America had become a place of darkness to where if you lit a match, no one could see it because the shadows swallowed the light and if any light started to grow at the slightest bit, someone would come and do everything in their power to destroy it. It was a reminder of the cruelty in being a constant victim of slavery and was seen as a way that the free White’s could shove the privilege of their freedom into the faces of the Negro population .
