2. What are the trends and developments in the animation industry?
The animation industry is one of the fastest growing industries. The reason why animation industry is growing this fast, is because of the growing popularity of the Internet, applications for smart phones and tablets. Another reason is that TV Stations no longer only focus on children, but also on teenagers, adults and families. Animation series like The Simpsons,
Southpark and King of the Hill are very succesfull on primetime TV.
Also the merchandising of animated series, video games, applications and films are the reason why the industry is growing this fast. Examples: Angry Birds, Pokemon, Shrek, etc.
Another trend in the animation industry, is the outsourcing of animation content to Asia.
Especially North America and Europa are making great use out of this. The major factor behind the outsourcing is the low costs, the professional computer animations platforms and the much lower salary costs in Asia (compared to North America en Europe).
California-based animator Gave Askew says about the newest trends and developments:
“Animations are no longer only stop motion, or 2D, or CG or puppetry, they are all these
Things blended together”. Brazilian animator Guilherme Marcondes agrees with him, and says: “Style-wise the new trend is not having a trend, it’s everything at the same time, all the time.” The case situation: Brown Bag Films split into two separate corporate entities. One for high yield TV commercials, and one for TV production work for international markets. Brown Bag has invested heavily in training for all staff. This is how they are dealing with the newest trends and developments.
