CDA COMPETENCY GOAL
CDA COMPETENCY GOAL #1
Competency standard 1: To establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment.
Functional area 1: Safe My goal is to ensure the safety of my children both indoors and outdoors. I always make sure that I am aware of all my children in my room and maintain an up to date face to name sheet. The room is set up in a manner so all children can be seen at all times. I make sure that all the electrical outlets are covered with protectors. All toys are checked daily for broken pieces, the room is clean and clutter free. For my infants, I make sure they sleep on their backs and that all the toys that are mouthed are washed with a bleach water solution, and the shelves and mats are cleaned before I leave. The child’s personal belongings are in his/her dresser drawer, cubby, or hung up. The children are encouraged to follow the rules such as walking, no running and sitting on a chair not standing. Emergency routes are posted by the door.
Functional area 2: Healthy
My goal is to promote healthy habits, such as hand washing throughout the day-before and after eating, after diaper changes, and after activities that require hand washing. I also clean and sanitize the change table after each change. The mouthed toys are immediately removed from the play area and sanitized at the end of day. Daily health checks are done every morning when the children arrive so we can make sure all injuries/and or health issues are documented. When a child displays signs of illness, phone calls are made for pick-up. The center provides healthy and nutritious meals and snacks.
Functional area 3: Learning Environment
My goal is to provide a stimulating learning environment that promotes independence. The room is set up in an organized manner with the reading center where are books are, the block area where the children have an opportunity to build things out of their imagination. There is also a cozy corner with mats where they can go to be alone or hang out with

In order to establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment I first begin with providing a clean and organized classroom. All toys and equipment are sanitized on a daily basis, all outlets are covered and all fixtures are mounted to the walls to prevent from tipping over. Upon entering the classroom every parent is required to sign a daily health check in which the teacher and the parent both assess the health of each child. Healthy meals and snacks are provided to each and every child, keeping in mind, the allergies that each child has. Medicines are also carried for each student that requires it on a daily basis. The classroom tables are wiped down and sanitized and the floor is swept after each meal. The children also brush their teeth after meals to help the children gain healthy brushing habits. The teacher child ratio is maintained at all times.…

To establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment I model safety practices and healthy routines in an environment that supports development and growth in these areas. My goal is to provide a clean healthy environment that meets each child’s physical needs. Making sure the classroom and playground are clean and safe at all times reduces the number of injuries of children while they are in my care. One of the ways I do this is by supervising children at all times by sight and sound even during nap times. Making sure all outlets are covered so children can’t access them. I make sure inside as well as outside there is nothing children can harm themselves on such as sharp objects or small items they can choke on. I ensure that all chemicals and cleaning supplies are put away out of the reach of children or stored in locked cabinets. I am certified in First Aid and CPR, which makes me knowledgeable of caring for accidents or injuries.…

As a professional I attend regular trainings both in and out of work. Some training is provided for me by my employer, while others I seek out on my own. In June I attended training for 2 weeks before children started attending class. These trainings focused on areas such as health, routines and transitions, environments, goals/objectives and school readiness. One way I apply these trainings is by setting a routine in the classroom and remembering to abide by it, while allowing some flexibility as the children need it. It is important to keep a routine so that the children know what to expect. A routine helps children to stay focused…

Responsive to participant needs. On their first day in our program, I make every effort to me4et and greet our clients, the parents as well as the children. I ask the parents if they need any special requirements, accommodations, or modifications to better service their children. Before the child enters the classroom, I make sure they know they are included. I post a welcome sign for each new child and their cubby is already labeled so they know where to store their belongings. Once the child has entered the classroom, I take another child and introduce them and then we all take a tour of the classroom. This gives us a time to get to know each other, I can find out their likes and dislikes, observe their interactions with other children, and begin to plan their development.…

One corner is our reading and quiet corner we have placed big cushions sofa chair and a bookcase with some additional books put onto the chair so this becomes a soft and cosy area for the children and so they realise that they can help themselves to the resources we also place some of the puppets and soft toys such as teddies on the cushions, this then enables the area to be inviting for the children. We also have a craft station where there are scissors, glue, colouring pencils, Sellotape and craft boxes so they can make projects on their own or with their peers. We always consider the impact of a colour that then reflects on a child’s emotions, research has shown that the colour yellow is recognised faster than any other colour, this colour also evokes spontaneity, and is joyful, optimistic, warm and signifies communication as well as being bright and happy. We need to make sure the room has a variety of different and stimulating toys, and that there is enough space for all the children to move around comfortably and have access around the room/rooms indoors and outdoors in the play area. The room should always be well lit and everything visible so the children and young people can see properly and communicate with each other…

You should take any specific needs of pupils into account when setting up the environment-for example the age, abilities and needs of the children with whom you are working. You should in particular take note of any pupils who have special educational needs (SEN). Furniture should be an appropriate size for the age of the children, so that they are able to sit comfortably when working. Children should not be hunched over tables which are to small or have difficulty in sitting normally. Also all materials must be age appropriate for their level of development of all pupils, for example for young children, small objects are potentially a choking hazard.…
