My topic of discussion is on Cecil Rhodes: The Imperialist
Cecil Rhodes
An English businessman, politician of south Africa, prime minister of Cape Colony in 1890, Made an immense fortune thru mining operations 1902
EARLY YEARS
Being a member of a large family, instead of attending a university, Rhodes went to South Africa in 1870 to be a farmer with his brother due to health reasons and the change in weather was better for him. His power and strength in the diamond-mining industry developed until, in 1880, he formed the De Beers Mining Company
SOUTH AFRICA
Rhodes played a major political and economic role in colonial south Africa. Rhodes spent a lot of time in South Africa while developing philosophies on British imperialism. He used his wealth to expand colonialism in southern Africa to gain control of what Rhodes hoped would be great mineral wealth. Between 1890 and 1900, Rhode’s Company gained control of a large territory that included many different indigenous peoples and kingdoms in what are today the three countries of Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe. One of these countries were named after him (Rhodesia)
As prime minister of Cape colony Rhodes had plans to expand the British empire by pushing the Africans away from their land as well as exploit them, all for development. Found a secret society that would extend British rule throughout the world and colonize most parts of it with British settlers, leading to the "ultimate recovery of the United States of America" by the British Empire
- the De Beers Mining Company expanded their territory making their own government and laws.
Rhodes used the African land and resources in order to acquire a fortune of approximately 6 million pounds. In case she asks. Rhodes tricked Lobengula , the Ndebele (Matebele) ruler, into an agreement by which Rhodes secured mining concessions in Matebelele
