i. Strength
Several strengths have contributed to the success of Selkirk Brick which is high quality of clay bricks and pavers. Despite clay bricks and pavers were often seen as a low-tech product, there was technical expertise required to produced a high quality product. Many kind of methods were used to produce the bricks such as moisture content, additives, temperature and time were monitored in order to get the sattisfied outcome. This can be seen when Selkirk Brick was recognised as the only brick company supplying products with Australian Products Standard AS1225. Other than that, three major acquisitions made by Selkirk has also strengthen the business. In 1982, Philips Bricks and Pottery was acquired due to their strong market in north-western Victoria. In 1987, Selkirk purchased Hick Timbers in Altona but unfortunately Hick Timbers was closed down in 1997 whereas in 1992, Shepparton Bricks and Pavers, one of largest concrete building in Victoria. Thus, this acquisition results in cheap concrete paver business for the company. Next, growing export to Japan is steady primary of the five-year distribution agreement. Because of the high quality of clay bricks and pavers, a leading Japanese company has choosen Selkirk to export the bricks to Japan and it was expected to triple recent export data within two years. Moreover, Selkirk has experienced and dedicated directors in the export business. The Group Managing Director, Bernie Segrave who handles the agents and build relationship in Asia and Export Manager, Peter Blackburn who was responsible for the export markets and ensured that products exported met the standard required.
