Impact on the Nursing Profession
Family-centered maternity care, which involved bringing the fathers of the baby into the delivery room, was just one of the ideas nurse midwives initiated. A study conducted by Hampton and Peterson (2012) examining the job satisfaction of CNMs, incorporated factors such as certified nurse midwives’ “satisfaction 1) with physician interaction, 2) with organizational policies, 3) with midwife nurse interaction, 4) with pay, 5) with job autonomy, 6) with professional status, 7) with job requirements, and 8) with physician respect” (Hampton & Peterson, 2012, p. 115). The study found that certified nurse midwives are extremely satisfied with their jobs and view themselves as independent professionals that are expected to work independently by others as well. CNMs are satisfied with their pay and job requirements, feel validated by other physicians with whom they are employed by, and feel as though the importance of nurse-midwifery is acknowledged (Hampton & Peterson,
