Certified Nursing Assistant Admission Essay
For four years I have know that ETSU was where I wanted to obtain my Nurse Practitioner Degree. I have been obsessed with the medical field for as long as I remember. I was that child who was always watching things like Grey’s Anatomy, Untold Stories of the ER, and HOUSE instead of normal kid shows. From the moment I learned that I could obtain my Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) licence in high school and work my way up, I knew that was what I wanted to do. In all my science classes I strived to learn everything I could. Any health class offered, I have took. My life has been consumed with learning, studying, and volunteering in any health care area. I gained respect from the employees and also management. My classmates would call on me to help them, or to ask me questions. I was in the mindset that I was already a CNA and that that was my job. After completing the classwork and clinical hours part of the class, came the written and skills test administered by the state. After studying for almost three months straight, and practicing the skills over and over until they were second nature I knew I was ready to take and pass the test. I had faith in myself, more than I should have, that I was going to pass both sections with flying colors. Come test day everyone in my class was as nervous as a mice while I was perfectly calm. When it came my time and done my skills I knew I had passed. I had no doubt I had passed. Then she handed me my

My desire to pursue a career in health care is greatly influenced by its unlimited opportunities for career development and the desire to impact another person’s life positively. As a kid, I always had a burning desire to become a nurse or a medical doctor but my parents’ influence and their perception of the engineering profession while in Nigeria lured me away. I trained and practiced as a Materials Engineer back in Nigeria, where I worked as a research and development officer for five years. However, coming to the United States created the turning point in my life. I searched for engineering jobs unsuccessfully for many months, and none was forthcoming despite availability of many job openings in nursing and healthcare related fields. In order to confirm my readiness to pursue nursing as a career, I entered a Practical Nursing program at the Wilbur Wright College in Chicago. At this time, I was still driving cab to support myself, while I dropped it completely upon graduation and passing LPN board examination.…

My personal nursing mission statement is changing and developing as my career advances, however, one core piece will remain constant. I will strive to provide the best, safest, most ethical and compassionate nursing care that I can for all patients and family members with whom I come in contact. I began my post-high school academic career as an accounting major. I enjoyed the challenge of manipulating a report until I had balanced. I thought I had found my calling. As my first semester was nearing an end, I found myself contemplating the thought of sitting behind a desk all day. I wondered if I would find fulfillment in this work as a career? The more I pondered this thought, the more I realized that this was not the right career path for me. I saw images of the medical assistant program in the catalog at the school where I was attending. I could not shake the thought of the medical field for a profession. I attained my medical assistant degree and worked in the field for 10 years. The longer I worked, the more I realized that there was more that I wanted to do, but my current degree restricted me from going further. I researched nursing school programs and selected one with a night/weekend program that would allow me to continue working full-time during my studies. I have a family that I needed to continue to provide for and this seemed to be the best fit. My nursing school decision was fortified when I was selected for an award by the nursing faculty from all four semesters for excellence in the clinical setting. After graduation, I began my nursing career working as a case manager for orthopedic worker’s compensation patients. During this time I gained critical knowledge of the importance of clear documentation, the ever-changing requirements of insurance companies and an extra measure of compassion for…
