My Clinical Experience
Erin Haggins
English 101, Section 302
September 26, 2012
Paper 1, Draft 1 Becoming a nurse has been a lifetime dream since I was a child. I was always told that I had a warm heart and the gift for caring. During my senior year, I finally got the opportunity to expand my true talent, which became a life-changing experience in my life. When my senior year approached, I was excited about taking the third class of Health Science Technology. Although I had taken the first and second class during my sophomore and junior year, this would be the year where I would get to demonstrate my true talent and developing skills. I was placed in the second group, which started after Christmas break. This kind of made me a little upset because I was ready to start my clinical hours in September. On the other hand, I looked at the date as having extra time to master my skills and build my confidence as a person. I guess you could say I was a bit nervous about caring for someone else. My instructor gave us all the material we needed to know for this course. She told us that it wasn’t going to easy, and that we really needed to be determined to pursue a career in the medical field. In other words, there was a lot of hard work was needed in order to pass this course. As I waited for January to draw near, I studied in my Nurse Aide Candidate Handbook every day. I practiced my skills in the classroom as well as at home. I was grateful to have a mother who is nurse, because she guided me through my steps. She would tell me the things I did wrong, and also the things I did right. While the first group did their clinicals, I had late-ins along with the people who were in my group. Instead of having it all week long, it was just on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. That was good enough for me because I was able to sleep in three days out of the week. But, I loved coming to school on Wednesday mornings, just to hear the crazy stories that the other group shared with us in class.

“You’re transferring schools, Karina!”, my mother exclaimed a week before my sophomore year. Ultimately, this was the last thing I wanted to hear. I kept trying to decipher whether the news was good or bad. Moving to a Medical Magnet school smelled like defeat, and I was not fond of change. Public school was my forte. I was adapted to crowded lunch rooms, lively classes, and having classes such as art, band, up to ROTC. I wasn’t aware of it at the time, but there was something hidden behind my personal chaos. Overall, this life-altering experience is what shaped me into the dedicated pupil and aspiring health care professional I am today.…

Nurses share the joys, pains, and triumphs of their patients. Everyday nurses show-up for duty, receive their patients, and without hesitation begin to become a valued member of an extended family. I initially went to school with the goal of becoming a medical doctor. At the time, I believed becoming a doctor was the only way I could ultimately give back to my community through my passion for science. The decision to pursue the field of advanced nursing, developed after sharing my concerns about healthcare in the Mississippi Delta with my local family nurse practitioner.…

I want to be a part of HSTE II because in the future I want to be a doctor. Right now I’m not very sure about what kind of doctor I want to be that is why I really want to be in this program so that I can experience all the parts in a hospital and find what kind of areas in the medical field that I’m really interested in, and which ones just don’t fit me and my interests. I don’t want to choose a path that I will end up regretting just because I don’t enjoy what I do. I am a person who loves to help and care for people, especially the people who really need the help, and I am a very quick learner. I always try to put myself in other person’s position because believe in the saying “Treat others the way you would like to be treated”. I intend to bring these major qualities of mine to the HSTE II class/clinical rotations because I think it is very important for someone in the medical field who attends to other people when they are at their lowest and weakest point to have these…

With less than a year left of school, I’ve been applying myself in so many different areas in order to better myself as a future doctor. Volunteering, shadowing and extra-curricular activities have all been part of my doings. I've got to admit these past three and a half years have been, by far, extremely interesting and challenging. I have been learning about life, health, body systems and their functions. It is fascinating to learn about the biological and chemical make-up of the human body and the countless processes that are occurring constantly within us. I am looking forward to entering medical school to learn in an even greater detail about the many different interactions with our body systems.…

Although, my educational interest is the catalyst for my pursuit of becoming a doctor; my motivation emanated from more than just wanting to learn how to assess and treat many different conditions. August 31, 2015 is a day I will never forget. My grandmother called and informed me that my mother had just gotten into a car accident. She told me that the car flipped about four times, immediately there was a multitude of thoughts and emotions running through my mind. Arriving at the hospital, I was scared, dejected and very anxious. Walking into the room, seeing my mother in a neck brace and groaning in pain instantly brought tears to my eyes. I…

Educating the family and or the community is a role that every nurse must participate in to promote, maintain, and restore health among them. To accomplish such requires family members receive and have a practical understanding of health-related information. One method to accomplish such is to develop a health educational plan. I had worked hard in school because of this desire to become a physician. But at a time I also became discouraged and worried about my future outlook. During my second semester of freshman year and going into sophomore year in college, I was still trying to figure out how to study properly and the troubles in physics and organic chemistry became a nightmare. On top of courses being difficult, I was also involved in a dance team, an active runner, and employed as an undergraduate peer advisor and TA, which became hard to balance. Sacrifices were made, which I came to realize is what a physician's job entails. I had never faced more of a…

For my clinical experience today I shadowed an RN, at the Ashe County Health Department. The RN was participating in the flu clinic today. She administered many flu vaccinations. Most of the individuals that came in today for the clinic were over the age of 65 and were given the high dose flu vaccination. The RN also worked with a Spanish interpreter during several visits throughout the day. She would first assess a Spanish speaking individual’s ability to speak English, then if deemed necessary she would call for the interpreter. The nurse made sure to always direct her questions, and maintain eye contact with the patient. She wanted them to feel included, and really engage them through therapeutic communication, even though she did not speak…

An issue that I encountered during one of my clinical rotations at Bakersfield Heart Hospital was a leadership and patient advocacy issue. On the last day of my clinical, my preceptor and I were assigned to triage. We saw one patient who came in with shortness of breath and high blood pressure, and another one who came in with headache. So, after doing the initial assessment, both of those patients were given rooms. Later, the physician went in their rooms to do his assessments, and after that he placed the orders in the computer for both patients. Fortunately, my preceptor checked the orders, and…

A patient experience that stands out as significant is the day I had an exchanged patient from a different country. This patient came in because part of her tooth fell out. When she pointed to the tooth, I saw she had a huge carious lesion. I told her to get a dental exam so the dentist can diagnose the suspicious disease. She refused to get a dental exam because the dentist was not going to fix her tooth that same day. I told her about Open Door and she agreed to a call them. During that visit, she told me that if she had a cleaning, was the “yellow stuff” going to come off her teeth. I explained to her that the yellowish hard deposits would be removed with the cleaning, but that she needed to get a dental exam because she had more suspicious areas. That same day, I did a prophylaxis on her and once I was done, I gave her the mirror and showed her were the yellowish hard deposits were once at.…

My Junior year in high school Trio Upward Bound, program that provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits, organized a visit to Idaho State University where we got to choose two fields we would like to learn more about. When I arrived there I knew I wanted to learn more about the medical field therefore I decided to go look at the Medical Laboratory class. As I was in the class, the instructor explained everything they learned there and some of the things they did, he even let me do some work that MLT’s do, like test what type of blood other patients had and look through microscopes to see what type of diseases each slide had. I honestly thought that was an amazing experience and at that moment I decided what profession I wanted to go into after high school.…
