Trauma Surgery Personal Statement
The area of specialization in medicine that most interests me is Trauma Surgery. This field of work is important to me for a multitude of reasons. I believe I can operate to the best of my abilities while handling the stressful and pressured situations presented to me while in the operating room. I have recently concluded that I work best under pressure and am more focused in tense or challenging situations. My roles in school plays along with performing in front of large crowds at football games are prime examples of my competence in a demanding situation. I am not easily overcome by stress and therefore manage to keep a cool head in adverse circumstances. I, as the oldest of five, am expected to exhibit certain responsibilities to my sisters, such as responding to unfortunate circumstances effectively and properly, namely performing the Heimlich Maneuver on my second youngest sister as she choked on a bottle cap. Helping injured people within its self is …show more content…
While assisting my father, I realized I had a tolerance for cleaning and processing animals. My ability to successfully use surgical tools, such as scalpels, tweezers and surgical scissors, became apparent in honors biology when my class began the dissection portion of our lessons and I was allowed to provide a demonstration for the class. Furthermore, my aptness for learning about medicine became obvious when I took a course in Medical Terminology my ninth grade year. Earning the highest grade in a class full of seniors came naturally and was very rewarding. The challenge was exciting enough to be enjoyable, which in turn made it an easy

By becoming a Surgical First Assistant, I begin the journey with my patients first, the moment they are rolled into the operation room, and I will be the last to send them on their way to recover after their procedure. I want to focus on the idea of making the experience as smooth as possible. Anything can happen in an operation room, and I want to make the process easier. The two shadow opportunity that I observed gave me a chance to test my interest.…

The moment I woke up from my surgery I remember my surgeon say that "everything thing went well, that the gallbladder came out fine with no complications." According to the DSM-5 trauma is defined as “exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury or sexual violation” (APA, 2013). The exposure must be as a result of either: direct experience the traumatic event, observed the traumatic event personally, learnt of a traumatic event that happened to a close family member or close friend, or experiences first-hand repeated or extreme exposure of traumatic event (not through pictures, media, television, or movies) (APA, 2013). In the course of my life, I have had quite a few scars. One physical scar was when I tripped, and landed on a rock, and cut my forehead. But the most memorable, was when I was eight years old, I was hurt when I accidentally landed on a table after being hit by a pillow. As a result, I had a wide open cut on the top of my head near my forehead from the landing. I was scarred for life. This was my second scar after I had the former at an earlier age.…

My whole childhood has climaxed to this crucial point of my life- my first footsteps into the world of medical science. I soared past elementary, middle, and high school in the hopes of becoming a professional in the healthcare industry, and what were once dreams is now becoming a reality. My general education classes at UCSD have trickled down to more specialized courses particular to my major, human biology. I have always appreciated the vastness of the human body and the many ways it can manipulate treatments to increase its performance and efficiency. There are two instances in my life that has inspired me to gain interest in medicine. My grandmother when I was around the age of twelve received double bypass surgery and I fell in love with the physician who took care of her. The physician was a middle aged woman who was one of the kindest person I have ever met, and she gave us the news of how everything went fine during surgery. She also gave us great confidence in how my grandmother would return to normal soon. The look on my parents and aunts face when she gave the news gave me goosebumps and to this day I feel the same goosebumps when I think about this. I just wanted to one day be in a position to deliver good news to a family and to see that “look” of relief on their faces. Another…

Family members would often call me with questions regarding their health. During my Internship as part of medical school, a 50-year-old presented to the clinic with numbness of his legs. His initial lab works showed increased blood sugar levels and increased hba1c levels and after doing an EKG I was able to confirm that he had suffered from a silent Myocardial Infarction. He was later started on appropriate treatment and when I met him later for outpatient follow-up, the whole family reported to be indebted to me for diagnosing a hidden problem. This really overwhelmed me and made me realize the kind of satisfaction I was able to provide a family by being an Internist. This also proved me that I had the thought process to untie the complexity involved and come up with a broad differential diagnosis. Taking up challenges is one of my attributes and I feel an Internist faces unique Intellectual challenges on a daily basis. From my experience, I can say that even a small change in someone’s life will make a difference, like when I was talking to my Aunt who is a diabetic, was complaining of muscle pain and after diagnosing her condition as medication-induced, I witnessed how peaceful she was after eliminating the…

Currently I am working with clients with substance use disorders at an all men residential treatment program. I had developed my theoretical orientation from Albert Ellis’s Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), Aaron Beck’s Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), and Carl Roger’s Client-Centered Therapy (CCT). Combining examining faulty thinking, distinguishing thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and practicing distress management skills, I have seen significant progress clients have made in recovery. The Rogerian idea of providing a warm and safe environment for client to express feelings and thoughts…

Trauma: a very difficult or unpleasant experience that causes someone to have mental or emotional problems usually for a long time. Have you ever experienced a trauma? I made it nearly nineteen years without enduring a traumatic experience. Yes, an affair leading into a divorce is considered a trauma. When the man I grew up idolizing left my family for a twenty-year-old girl, it left me mentally and emotionally unstable. As many times as my parents told me that their problems were their problems and that they shouldn’t affect me; this affected me. My life before the affair was great and carefree, however, now I’m not sure that I’ll ever get back there. It is literally as if I lived a different life before the trauma.…

Complex trauma, or Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD), is a form of repetitive, interpersonal trauma that often occurs during childhood, such as sexual abuse or domestic violence (Courtois, 2008). In 2015, 9.2 out of every 1000 children were reported as victims of neglect (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2017). As these children develop into adulthood, evidence of complex trauma may appear in the form of cognitive and behavioral impairments, as well as various mood and personality disorders (Olson-Morrison, 2017). Treatment is often focused on the disorders rather than the actual trauma itself. Courtois (2008) outlines seven areas of impairment which serve as diagnostic criteria for complex trauma. She argues that cultivating…

In The Fixer, the comic is set in 2001, where Sacco’s avatar as the war reporter returned to postwar Sarajevo and an economically devastated Bosnia. The postwar scenes indicate the tentative relationship between Neven and Sacco’s avatar, by utilizing the graphic and narration to allow the audience to analyze the ideology and subjectivity of the characters. According to Terri Tomsky, he defines the trauma economy as where the trauma interacts “with other capitalist power structures” (49). Similarly, Sacco reminds the reader that the story reflects the realistic side of the journalism industry, the story is based on the economic value exchange of trauma that is surrounded by political issue; thereby, “enable or disable” the awareness of particular…
